Overview#

The Kohler 20RCA is a 20-kilowatt residential air-cooled standby generator. Per Kohler's factory spec sheet, it pairs the Kohler CH1000 999 cc V-twin (3,600 RPM) with a single-phase 120/240 V alternator and an aluminum sound enclosure, and it can run on either natural gas or LP.

The 20 kW size point#

20 kW is one of the more common residential standby sizes. Installed cost on the air-cooled platform is competitive with comparable Generac Guardian models in the same kW band; selection should be driven by the home's actual load calculation, the local dealer/service network, and whether the installation site favors air-cooled or liquid-cooled.

Service intervals#

Per Kohler's RCA owner manual, with Kohler PRO 10W-50 oil and the PRO extended-life filter, oil and filter changes are on a 300-hour / 2-year interval. Without the PRO oil/filter, the manual specifies 100 hours / yearly oil and 200 hours / yearly filter. We default to the PRO regimen.

Our service experience#

The 20RCA is a common Kohler residential install in our territory. For clients in noise-sensitive neighborhoods or hot inland climates we typically recommend a liquid-cooled RCL unit instead.

Estimate runtime for the Kohler 20RCA

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

210,000 BTU/hr210.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Manufacturer-recommended intervals for the Kohler 20RCA under standby duty. Field intervals may differ based on load profile, ambient conditions, and fuel quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the engine in the 20RCA?
Per the Kohler factory spec sheet and CH940-CH1000 service manual, the 20RCA uses a Kohler CH1000 V-twin air-cooled engine — 999 cc, 90 x 78.5 mm bore/stroke, 8.8:1 compression — at 3,600 RPM.
What is the rated output on natural gas vs LP?
The factory spec sheet lists 20 kW standby at 60 Hz on either NG or LP at 120/240 V single phase. The underlying engine produces more shaft power on LP than on NG, but the genset's electrical rating is the published figure to use for sizing.
Should I consider a liquid-cooled unit instead?
For homes whose worst-case load runs near 20 kW continuously, or for installations in hot inland climates where ambient routinely exceeds 100 °F, a liquid-cooled platform (such as a 24RCL/38RCL) typically delivers longer engine life and lower derate at high ambient. Discuss with your installer based on your actual load study.
