Overview#
The Kohler 14RCA is a 14-kilowatt residential air-cooled standby generator — the entry point of Kohler's (now Rehlko's) home backup lineup. It's a common choice for small-to-medium homes where essential loads (HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, basic kitchen) need coverage during outages without the cost of liquid-cooled units.
Per the published Kohler G4-270 spec sheet, the 14RCA uses a Kohler CH740 V-twin (725 cc) at 3,600 RPM, 120/240 V single-phase output, multi-fuel (NG/LP), with an aluminum sound enclosure.
Air-cooled tradeoffs#
The RCA series uses an air-cooled engine — simpler and cheaper than a liquid-cooled platform, with corresponding tradeoffs (typically: more frequent service intervals, lower sustained-load tolerance in heat, shorter engine life). For specifics on a comparable liquid-cooled Kohler/Rehlko unit, see the RCL family.
Service intervals#
Per Kohler's RCA owner manual, with the OEM-recommended Kohler PRO 10W-50 oil and PRO extended-life oil filter, oil and filter changes are on a 300-hour / 2-year interval. With a non-Kohler conventional oil and filter, the manual specifies 100 hours / yearly oil and 200 hours / yearly filter. We default to the PRO oil/filter regimen on every service contract.
Our service experience#
The 14RCA is our most budget-friendly Kohler install. The main issue we encounter in our territory: inland summer ambient temperatures can drive the air-cooled engine close to its derate threshold under sustained full load. For high-ambient inland installations we steer customers toward a liquid-cooled platform.
