The Kohler RXT is Kohler's advanced residential automatic transfer switch with built-in load management and digital communication with the generator controller (RDC2/DC2). Unlike the simpler RDT, the RXT integrates intelligence that monitors real-time generator output and automatically manages loads without add-on kits.
When utility power fails, the RXT communicates digitally with the generator to start, monitors voltage/frequency lock, transfers the panel, and actively manages load priority throughout the outage. When utility returns, it retransfers and coordinates cool-down with the controller.
The RXT's integrated load management board handles up to 6 loads:
4 customer-supplied non-essential loads (pool pump, EV charger, dryer, etc.)
2 independent HVAC systems
When generator output approaches capacity (monitored via current and frequency), the RXT automatically sheds non-essential loads in programmed priority order — no external kit, no additional wiring beyond the managed circuits.
RCA14, RCA20 (note: an RCL24 draws ~100A continuous at 240V — use RXT 150A or 200A for genset-side headroom)

Important: The RXT requires a generator with the RDC2 or DC2 controller. All current-production Kohler residential generators include this. If you have an older Kohler unit, you need the RDT instead.
RXT (advanced): Digital controller integration, built-in load management, OnCue Plus native. Requires RDC2/DC2 generator. Best for new installations with current-production generators.
RDT (universal): Simpler 2-wire-start switch, compatible with any Kohler generator (including older models). Load shedding available via add-on kit only. Best for retrofits, older generators, or when you want universal compatibility.
For new OnPoint installations with current Kohler generators, we default to the RXT for its native load management and full OnCue Plus monitoring integration.
The RXT installs in the same position as any residential ATS — between the utility meter and the main panel (service-entrance position) or adjacent.
Key considerations:
Generator compatibility: verify RDC2/DC2 controller before specifying RXT
Load management wiring: managed circuits require dedicated conductors to the RXT
OnCue Plus: comes integrated — remote monitoring via web/iOS/Android is standard
Transfer time: approximately 10 seconds from utility loss to generator power delivery
Exercise scheduling: programmed via the RDC2 controller interface or OnCue Plus app
Frequently Asked Questions
What amperage sizes does the Kohler RXT come in?
The RXT series is available in 100A, 150A, 200A, 300A, and 400A configurations. All sizes are available in both standard and service-entrance-rated versions. The 200A SE model is the most common for residential installations.
What's the difference between the RXT and RDT?
The RXT is Kohler's advanced ATS that communicates digitally with the generator's RDC2/DC2 controller. It has built-in load management (up to 6 loads) without add-on kits. The RDT is the simpler universal switch that works with any 2-wire-start Kohler generator but requires an add-on kit for load shedding.
Which generators work with the RXT?
The RXT requires a Kohler generator equipped with an RDC2 or DC2 controller — this includes current-production RCL and RESA series units. It will NOT work with older 2-wire-start-only generators. For older generators, use the RDT instead.
Does the RXT have built-in load management?
Yes — the RXT has a combined interface/load management board that manages up to 6 loads (4 customer non-essential loads + 2 HVAC systems). It monitors generator current and frequency in real-time and automatically sheds non-critical loads to prevent overload. No add-on kit required.
Can I use the RXT with a non-Kohler generator?
No — the RXT requires digital communication with a Kohler RDC2/DC2 controller. It is not compatible with non-Kohler generators or older Kohler units without the RDC2. For universal compatibility, use the Kohler RDT instead.
