Overview#
The Kohler RDT is Kohler's universal residential automatic transfer switch — a straightforward 2-wire-start ATS that works with any Kohler generator ever made. It's the go-to choice for retrofits, older generator installations, and situations where you want proven simplicity without requiring specific controller compatibility.
The RDT replaced the older RRT series and puts all intelligence in the switch itself (vs the RXT which relies on the generator's RDC2 controller). This makes it generator-agnostic within the Kohler ecosystem.
Universal compatibility#
The RDT's defining feature: it works with any Kohler generator that has a 2-wire start signal, including:
- Current RCL series (liquid-cooled)
- Current RCA/RESA series (air-cooled)
- Older RES/RCL generations
- KG series (industrial gaseous) at 120/240V
- Smaller REOZ diesel units
This makes it the default choice when replacing an existing ATS or when the generator may be upgraded in the future.
Load management (optional add-on)#
Out of the box, the RDT is a simple whole-house transfer switch — everything transfers, no prioritization. For load management, Kohler offers the Load Shed Kit (GM88281-KP1) that adds:
- Management of up to 6 loads (4 x 120V + 2 HVAC)
- Automatic shedding when generator approaches capacity
- Priority-based restore when load drops
This is a field-installable add-on, not a built-in feature. For native load management without add-ons, use the RXT instead.
Load center variants#
The RDT is available with an integrated breaker panel (load center), combining ATS and circuit panel in one enclosure:
- RDT 200B: 24-circuit load center (Square D QO breakers)
- RDT 200BSE: 42-circuit service-entrance load center
These save space and simplify wiring for new construction where the ATS and panel can co-locate.
OnPoint perspective#
We install the RDT in two primary scenarios:
- Retrofits — replacing an older ATS on an existing generator without RDC2 capability
- Budget-conscious new installs — when the homeowner doesn't need load management and wants the simpler, less expensive switch
For new installations with current-production generators, we default to the RXT for its native load management and OnCue Plus integration. The RDT remains our recommendation for any older generator or when maximum simplicity is preferred.
