Overview#
The Kohler 230REOZJE is a 230-kilowatt standby (205 kW prime) diesel commercial standby generator powered by a John Deere 6090HF484C engine at 1800 RPM. The 9-liter, 6-cylinder engine is EPA Tier 3 certified for stationary emergency applications — an important distinction for facility operators comparing this model to newer Tier 4 Final units. Tier 3 stationary emergency certification is permissible for fixed backup power in most jurisdictions and does not require DEF or SCR aftertreatment hardware, reducing complexity and maintenance requirements.
The Kohler 4UA9 (or optionally 4UA13) Fast-Response II permanent-magnet alternator provides excellent voltage response and sustained short-circuit capability — the 4UA13 variant delivers 960 kVA peak motor starting at 480V, making this unit well-suited for facilities with large motor loads (HVAC chillers, elevators, medical imaging equipment). The APM402 controller provides Modbus RTU/TCP and BACnet communications; the optional APM603 adds 7-inch touchscreen and parallel bus capability for up to 8 units.
The 230REOZJE is a stationary open-skid unit with enclosure options available, measuring 118.1" x 51.2" x 74.4" and weighing 5,000–5,400 lb. wet. It is a direct competitor to the Cummins QSB9 and Generac 230kW class in the commercial standby market.

Kohler's published maintenance schedule for the 230REOZJE / John Deere 6090HF484C engine:
| Service | Interval |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter change | Every 250 hours or 12 months |
| Fuel filter replacement (secondary + primary/water separator) | Every 500 hours |
| Air filter inspection/replacement | Every 500 hours |

| Load bank test | Every 12 months (NFPA 110 requirement) |
| Major overhaul | Every 15,000 hours |
The John Deere 6090HF484C oil pan holds 33.4 liters (35.3 quarts) with filter. The starting system is 24-volt with two 925 CCA batteries (12V each in series). The 24V system draws 60A from the battery charging alternator. Water-cooled oil cooler on this engine benefits from clean coolant — use inhibited ethylene glycol to OEM specification at the recommended flush intervals.
Common Failure Modes#
Fuel quality degradation is the primary service issue for the 230REOZJE. The John Deere 6090HF484C uses a high-pressure common-rail fuel system with 2-micron secondary filtration; stale or contaminated diesel causes injector fouling, hard starting, and rough running. Units installed at facilities with low fuel turnover (long standby periods between utility outages) should have fuel tested and treated on a semi-annual basis.
Turbocharger wear — presenting as power loss and elevated exhaust smoke — is the most common significant repair at higher hours. The 6090 turbocharger is a field-serviceable component, but the root cause (fuel quality, oil quality, extended light-load operation) should be addressed at the same time to prevent recurrence.
Battery failures (dual 12V, 925 CCA) are the most common minor issue. Both batteries should be load-tested at each annual service and replaced on a 3–4 year cycle.
Our service experience#
OnPoint Generators provides installation, maintenance, load bank testing, and emergency service for Kohler industrial generators throughout Northern California and the Central Valley. The 230REOZJE is one of the most commonly installed commercial diesel standbys in the 200–250 kW class in our service area — it is a standard specification for mid-size hospitals, government buildings, and commercial campuses. The John Deere 6090 engine is well-supported through regional John Deere dealers and Kohler/Rehlko distributors, making parts availability excellent throughout Northern California.
FAQ#
What engine powers the Kohler 230REOZJE?#
The 230REOZJE uses a John Deere 6090HF484C diesel engine — a 6-cylinder, 9.0-liter turbocharged and charge-air-cooled engine running at 1800 RPM, rated to 258 kW (346 HP) maximum output.
What is the standby power rating of the 230REOZJE?#
The 230REOZJE is rated at 230 kW standby (288 kVA at 0.8 PF three-phase) using the 4UA13 alternator at 120/208V. The 4UA9 alternator configuration is rated at 225 kW standby. Prime power is 205 kW (4UA13). All ratings are per Kohler spec sheet G5-339.
Is the 230REOZJE EPA Tier 4 Final?#
No. The 230REOZJE is EPA Tier 3 certified for stationary emergency standby applications. This is appropriate for fixed backup power installations. If Tier 4 Final nonroad certification is required (for example, for mobile/trailer deployment), the appropriate alternative is the REOZT4 trailer series.
