Overview#
The Cat 3512B is a 1,230-1,500 kW diesel generator -- the upgraded V-12 platform in Cat's 3500 Series that bridges the gap between the original 3512 and the modern C32B. With Electronic Unit Injection (EUI), the ADEM III electronic governor, and support for low, medium, and high voltage configurations up to 13,800V, the 3512B is one of Caterpillar's most versatile large diesel generator sets.
The 3512B supports four duty cycles: standby, mission critical, prime, and continuous. At the 1500 ekW mission critical standby rating, it delivers 1875 kVA at 0.8 power factor. The EMCP 4.2B controller provides full protective relaying, Modbus RTU communication, and Cat Connect remote monitoring.
EUI and the 3512B advantage#
The 3512B's Electronic Unit Injection (EUI) system represents a significant upgrade over the original 3512's Direct Unit Injection. EUI provides electronically controlled injection timing and fuel delivery, resulting in better fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and improved transient response. The ADEM III governor integrates seamlessly with the EUI system for precise speed and load control.

Medium and high voltage configurations#
The 3512B is available in low voltage (380-480V), medium voltage (2400V, 4160V), and high voltage (13,800V) configurations. Medium voltage units use form-wound alternators with permanent magnet excitation and winding temperature detectors. This voltage flexibility makes the 3512B suitable for utility interconnection, large campus distribution, and industrial plant power systems where medium-voltage distribution reduces cable costs and line losses.
Our service experience#
The 3512B is a proven workhorse in data centers, hospitals, and large industrial facilities across Northern California. The EUI fuel system is reliable but requires clean fuel -- fuel polishing is essential for standby units. The dual compression ratio option (14.0:1 standard vs 15.5:1 HD) affects both performance and maintenance intervals, so it is important to know which configuration is installed. At 25,090 lbs dry weight, structural and rigging planning is critical. The 3500 Series parts commonality between the 3512B and 3516B simplifies fleet support.
