Overview#
The Cat 3516 is a 1,600-kilowatt diesel generator set — one of Caterpillar's flagship large-engine platforms for mission-critical power. Powered by the 3516 turbocharged V-16 engine with 69 liters of displacement, it serves data centers, hospitals, large campus installations, and industrial facilities where reliable megawatt-class power is non-negotiable.
The 3516 supports standby, mission-critical, prime, and continuous duty cycles, making it one of the most versatile platforms in Cat's large generator lineup. With voltage options spanning 380V to 13,800V and multiple alternator frame sizes, the 3516 can be configured for virtually any power distribution architecture.
The V-16 advantage#
The 3516 engine uses mechanical unit injection and the ADEM A3 electronic governing system. The V-16 configuration delivers smooth power delivery with natural vibration balance, and the 13.0:1 compression ratio provides reliable cold-start capability. The engine's bore (170 mm) and stroke (190 mm) dimensions are shared across the entire 3500 series, providing extensive parts commonality with the 3508, 3512, and other 3500-series variants.
At 1,600 kW, the 3516 fills the critical segment between the 3512 (up to 1,250 kW) and Cat's massive 3516B/C models. For data center applications, multiple 3516 units in parallel provide multi-megawatt capacity with N+1 or 2N redundancy architectures.
EMCP 4.2 control platform#
The standard EMCP 4.2 control panel provides comprehensive generator management: true RMS AC metering across all three phases, programmable protective relaying (over/under voltage, over/under frequency, reverse power, overcurrent), and Modbus RTU communications for BMS integration. The PLC functionality and customizable screens allow site-specific programming without aftermarket controller hardware.
Our service experience#
The 3516 is a cornerstone platform at our large commercial accounts. At 33,840 pounds dry weight, installation requires careful structural engineering — reinforced concrete pads, anti-vibration isolators, and adequate ventilation for the substantial heat rejection (over 1,000 kW to jacket water alone at full load). The V-16 configuration requires balanced service attention across both cylinder banks, and we recommend Cat's S.O.S fluid analysis program for trending oil condition, coolant chemistry, and fuel quality. The dual-turbo arrangement on some configurations demands regular inspection of both units for balanced boost pressure. With proper maintenance, the 3516 platform routinely reaches 20,000+ hours before major overhaul.
