Overview#

The Cat 3516 is a 1,600-kilowatt diesel generator set — one of Caterpillar's flagship large-engine platforms for mission-critical power. Powered by the 3516 turbocharged V-16 engine with 69 liters of displacement, it serves data centers, hospitals, large campus installations, and industrial facilities where reliable megawatt-class power is non-negotiable.

The 3516 supports standby, mission-critical, prime, and continuous duty cycles, making it one of the most versatile platforms in Cat's large generator lineup. With voltage options spanning 380V to 13,800V and multiple alternator frame sizes, the 3516 can be configured for virtually any power distribution architecture.

The V-16 advantage#

The 3516 engine uses mechanical unit injection and the ADEM A3 electronic governing system. The V-16 configuration delivers smooth power delivery with natural vibration balance, and the 13.0:1 compression ratio provides reliable cold-start capability. The engine's bore (170 mm) and stroke (190 mm) dimensions are shared across the entire 3500 series, providing extensive parts commonality with the 3508, 3512, and other 3500-series variants.

At 1,600 kW, the 3516 fills the critical segment between the 3512 (up to 1,250 kW) and Cat's massive 3516B/C models. For data center applications, multiple 3516 units in parallel provide multi-megawatt capacity with N+1 or 2N redundancy architectures.

EMCP 4.2 control platform#

The standard EMCP 4.2 control panel provides comprehensive generator management: true RMS AC metering across all three phases, programmable protective relaying (over/under voltage, over/under frequency, reverse power, overcurrent), and Modbus RTU communications for BMS integration. The PLC functionality and customizable screens allow site-specific programming without aftermarket controller hardware.

Our service experience#

The 3516 is a cornerstone platform at our large commercial accounts. At 33,840 pounds dry weight, installation requires careful structural engineering — reinforced concrete pads, anti-vibration isolators, and adequate ventilation for the substantial heat rejection (over 1,000 kW to jacket water alone at full load). The V-16 configuration requires balanced service attention across both cylinder banks, and we recommend Cat's S.O.S fluid analysis program for trending oil condition, coolant chemistry, and fuel quality. The dual-turbo arrangement on some configurations demands regular inspection of both units for balanced boost pressure. With proper maintenance, the 3516 platform routinely reaches 20,000+ hours before major overhaul.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cat 3516 generator set?
The Cat 3516 is a 1,600 kW (2,000 kVA) diesel generator set powered by the 3516 turbocharged V-16 engine with 69 liters of displacement. It is one of Caterpillar's largest single-engine generator platforms, designed for mission-critical standby, prime, and continuous power applications at data centers, hospitals, and large industrial facilities.
What voltages does the Cat 3516 support?
The 3516 is available in low voltage (380, 440, 480, 600V), medium voltage (2400, 4160V), and high voltage (6300, 6600, 6900, 12470, 13200, 13800V) configurations. Low/medium voltage units use random-wound or form-wound alternators in 1600/1800 frames; high voltage units use form-wound alternators in 2700/3000 frames with permanent magnet excitation.
What controller does the Cat 3516 use?
The standard controller is the EMCP 4.2, with optional upgrades to EMCP 4.3 or EMCB 4.4. The EMCP 4.2 provides true RMS AC metering, programmable protective relaying (27/59, 81, 32, 50/51), Modbus RTU communications, Cat Connect connectivity, load histogram, and PLC functionality with customizable screens.
How much fuel does the Cat 3516 consume?
At standby rating and 50 Hz/1500 RPM, the 3516 consumes approximately 111.2 gallons per hour at full load, 83.9 GPH at 75% load, 59.7 GPH at 50% load, and 34.9 GPH at 25% load. Fuel rates are based on No. 2 diesel at 35 API gravity with an LHV of 18,390 BTU/lb.
What are the dimensions and weight of the Cat 3516?
The Cat 3516 generator set measures approximately 234.4 inches long by 90 inches wide by 94.9 inches high, with a dry weight of 33,840 pounds (15,350 kg). Installation requires reinforced concrete pads and typically anti-vibration mounting systems — rubber, spring, or IBC seismic isolators are available.
