Overview#

The MTU 16V2000 DS1000 delivers 1 MW class power from the compact Series 2000 platform. At 1,000 kWe standby and 900 kWe prime, it bridges the gap between mid-range gensets and the larger Series 4000 lineup, offering a full megawatt of standby capacity in a package that weighs under 19,000 lbs and fits within a 200 x 90 inch footprint.

The 16V2000G26S engine uses a 35.7-liter V16 configuration with a smaller bore (135mm) and stroke (156mm) than the Series 4000. Water-to-air charge air cooling (TB designation) provides efficient intake temperature management in a more compact cooling package than the air-to-air intercoolers used on some competitors. The electronic isochronous governor (ADEC) provides +/-0.25% steady-state frequency regulation and supports both droop and isochronous paralleling.

The DS1000 is the top of the 16V2000 lineup at 60 Hz. For facilities needing more than 1 MW, the next step is the 12V4000 DS1250 (1,250 kW standby) — a larger, heavier unit from the Series 4000 platform designed for data center and mission-critical applications.

The 1 MW class: compact power#

At 18,795 lbs operating weight, the DS1000 is less than half the weight of the Series 4000 DS1250 (36,190 lbs) while delivering 80% of its standby output. This weight advantage makes the DS1000 particularly attractive for rooftop installations, parking structure-mounted pads, and retrofit projects where structural load capacity is constrained.

The voltage range extends from 208V to 4,160V, covering the full spectrum from building distribution (208/480V) to medium-voltage campus applications (4,160V). For paralleled installations, arrays of 3-4 DS1000 units can provide 2.7-3.6 MW of aggregate standby capacity with N+1 redundancy — an alternative to fewer, larger Series 4000 units when modularity and maintainability are priorities.

Our service experience#

The Series 2000 platform is widely deployed in commercial and industrial standby applications. The water-to-air charge air cooling system requires periodic inspection of the TB (charge air) heat exchanger for internal fouling, particularly in installations where the coolant circuit shares a common loop with the engine jacket water. We recommend separate coolant loop monitoring with dedicated temperature and pressure gauges on the charge air circuit.

At 18,795 lbs, the DS1000 is light enough for standard rigging equipment — no need for the heavy-lift cranes required for Series 4000 installations. This reduces both initial installation cost and future service costs when major components (alternator, radiator) need replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the power rating of the MTU 16V2000 DS1000?
The MTU 16V2000 DS1000 is rated at 1,000 kWe standby, 900 kWe prime, and 900 kWe data center continuous at 60 Hz. The standby rating is for variable load with unlimited runtime; the prime rating is for unlimited runtime at constant load.
What engine powers the MTU 16V2000 DS1000?
The DS1000 uses the MTU 16V2000G26S engine — a 35.7-liter, 16-cylinder V-configuration diesel rated at approximately 1,338 bhp at 1,800 RPM. It features electronic isochronous governing (ADEC), 16:1 compression ratio, and EPA Tier 2 certification. The Series 2000 uses a smaller bore (135mm) and stroke (156mm) than the Series 4000.
How does the Series 2000 DS1000 compare to the Series 4000 DS1250?
The DS1000 (Series 2000) and DS1250 (Series 4000) serve overlapping power ranges but are fundamentally different platforms. The DS1000 packs 1,000 kW into 35.7 liters from 16 smaller cylinders, while the DS1250 delivers 1,250 kW from 57.2 liters with 12 larger cylinders. The DS1000 is lighter (18,795 vs 36,190 lbs) and more compact, making it better suited for space-constrained sites. The DS1250 offers more headroom and is part of the data-center-optimized Series 4000 platform.
