Overview#
The Kohler 35REOZT4 is a 30-kilowatt standby (28 kW prime) EPA Tier 4 Final diesel mobile trailer generator powered by a Kohler KDI 1903 TCR engine at 1800 RPM. As a trailer-mounted unit, it is designed for portable and temporary power applications including construction sites, events, planned utility outages, and emergency deployment. The unit meets Tier 4 Final emissions requirements using cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) — no Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) required — which eliminates DPF regen downtime common on competing models.
The 35REOZT4 features a brushless wound-field alternator with Kohler's PowerBoost excitation system, delivering strong voltage response and sustained short-circuit current capability. It ships with a 293-liter (77-gallon) subbase fuel tank rated for a minimum of 24-hour run time at prime rating, integrated 110% secondary containment for fuel, and a 125% oil/coolant containment basin. A single-axle DOT-compliant trailer with electric brakes and breakaway system makes it road-towable by any standard pickup truck.
Control is via the Decision-Maker 3500 paralleling controller, which enables multiple units to be synchronized for larger temporary installations. Shore-power connection points are provided for battery charger, block heater, and battery heater — important for cold-climate readiness in the Sierra Nevada foothills and coastal Northern California.

Service & Maintenance#
Kohler's published maintenance schedule for the 35REOZT4 / KDI 1903 TCR engine:
| Service | Interval |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter change | Every 250 hours or 12 months |
| Fuel filter replacement | Every 250 hours |
| Air filter inspection/replacement | Every 500 hours |
| Coolant flush | Every 2,000 hours or 3 years |
| Load bank test | Every 12 months (NFPA 110 requirement) |
| Major overhaul | Every 8,000 hours |
For units in standby service running fewer than 250 hours per year, the calendar-based intervals govern. Kohler recommends Kohler Genuine oil (API CJ-4 or ACEA E6–E9) and genuine filters. Fuel quality is a primary maintenance concern for this series: ULSD with sulfur content under 15 ppm is required; diesel stored more than 6 months should be tested and treated.
Common Failure Modes#
The most frequent service issue we see on this series involves the DPF warning system. Despite using EGR+DOC instead of a full DPF, the 35REOZT4 does have aftertreatment components that trigger fault codes when back-pressure limits are approached — typically seen after roughly 4,000 hours of heavy-load mobile service or when units have been run on degraded fuel. Injector fouling from poor fuel quality presents as hard starting, reduced power output, and increased black smoke, and is often preceded by extended periods of light-load operation that leaves deposits on the injector tips.
Battery failures are the most common minor issue: the Kohler 35REOZT4 uses a single 12V, 925 CCA battery. Units sitting on standby without a functional battery charger will fail their weekly exercise start. Annual battery inspection and replacement at 3–4 years is standard practice for Northern California's climate.
Our service experience#
OnPoint Generators provides installation, maintenance, load bank testing, and emergency service for Kohler industrial generators throughout Northern California and the Central Valley. The 35REOZT4 is a popular unit in our rental and temporary-power fleet support work — construction sites along the I-5 corridor and event venues in the Bay Area use these regularly. Because this model shares engine components with the stationary REOZK series, we stock common filters and parts for both product lines, which reduces response time for emergency service calls.
FAQ#
What is the standby rating of the Kohler 35REOZT4?#
The Kohler 35REOZT4 is rated at 30 kW standby. The model name "35" refers to the older naming convention — the actual standby output is 30 kW (37.5 kVA at 0.8 PF three-phase). Prime power is 28 kW. All ratings are per Kohler spec sheet G5-412.
Is the 35REOZT4 a mobile or stationary generator?#
The 35REOZT4 is a trailer-mounted mobile generator, EPA Tier 4 Final certified for nonroad applications. It is designed for temporary and portable power needs, not for permanent installation. A single-axle DOT/TC-compliant trailer with electric brakes is available as an option.
Does the 35REOZT4 require a DPF?#
No. The 35REOZT4 meets EPA Tier 4 Final without a Diesel Particulate Filter by using cooled EGR and a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst. This simplifies maintenance and eliminates forced-regen downtime.
What fuel does the Kohler 35REOZT4 use?#
The 35REOZT4 is rated for ASTM D975 or EN 590 Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD, under 15 ppm sulfur). It is also approved for certified Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and Renewable Diesel (RD) per EN15940/ASTM D975. Fuel consumption is up to 4% higher with HVO/RD vs. standard ULSD.
