Overview#

The Kohler 15REOZK is a 15-kilowatt standby (13 kW prime) diesel commercial standby generator powered by a Kohler KDI1903M engine at 1800 RPM. The KDI1903M is a naturally aspirated, 3-cylinder, 1.9-liter engine — a deliberately simple design without a turbocharger or emissions aftertreatment hardware, certified for stationary emergency use under EPA's less demanding standby emissions rules rather than Tier 4 nonroad.

The 15REOZK is part of the REOZK series targeting small commercial facilities, retail locations, telecom sites, and light institutional applications where natural gas is unavailable or impractical. The brushless wound-field alternator uses Kohler's PowerBoost excitation system for strong voltage response and sustained short-circuit capability. The unit accepts 100% rated load in a single step, which is important for loads with large inrush current at startup.

The open-skid version measures 55.1" x 31.9" x 42.7" and weighs 1,003 lb. wet — small enough for forklift placement and installation in tight mechanical rooms. The sound-attenuated enclosure adds approximately 9.4" of length. Multiple alternator options accommodate voltages from 120/208V three-phase through 347/600V three-phase. The APM402 controller provides Modbus communication for building management system integration.

Service & Maintenance#

Kohler's published maintenance schedule for the 15REOZK / KDI1903M engine:

ServiceInterval
Oil and filter changeEvery 250 hours or 12 months
Fuel filter replacement (prefilter + primary/water separator)Every 250 hours
Air filter inspection/replacementEvery 500 hours
Coolant flushEvery 2,000 hours or 3 years
Load bank testEvery 12 months (NFPA 110 requirement)
Major overhaulEvery 8,000 hours

The KDI1903M oil pan holds 8.2 liters (8.7 quarts) with filter. The naturally aspirated design is forgiving — there is no turbocharger oil supply to check and no aftertreatment system to manage. A single 12V 650 CCA battery handles starting; battery condition should be verified at each annual service.

Block heater is recommended for ambient temperatures below 20°C (68°F) to ensure reliable cold-weather starting. A 600W 110–120V block heater is available as an option and should be specified for Northern California's mountain elevation sites or inland winter deployments.

Common Failure Modes#

Fuel quality degradation is the primary service issue: the KDI1903M fuel system uses a prefilter (74 microns) and a primary/water separator (5 microns), but stale diesel that has been stored for many months can still foul injectors. The naturally aspirated engine is less sensitive than turbocharged models but is not immune — hard starting and rough idle at low load are the early signs.

Coolant thermostat issues present as overcooling: the engine runs too cool at light loads, prolonging warmup and contributing to wet stacking if the unit exercises at low load for extended periods. Upgrading exercise load or installing a coolant blanket for seasonal cold weather can mitigate this.

Battery failures are the most common minor service call — the single 12V battery should be replaced on a 3–4 year cycle regardless of condition testing.

Our service experience#

OnPoint Generators provides installation, maintenance, load bank testing, and emergency service for Kohler industrial generators throughout Northern California and the Central Valley. The 15REOZK is a common choice for small commercial sites — retail plazas, small office buildings, telecom huts, and wineries throughout the Bay Area, Central Valley, and North Coast. The compact footprint and simple naturally-aspirated engine make this one of the lowest-maintenance diesel standby units in the commercial market. Our technicians can complete a full annual service in under two hours on site.

FAQ#

What engine is in the Kohler 15REOZK?#

The 15REOZK uses a Kohler KDI1903M diesel engine — a 3-cylinder, 1.9-liter naturally aspirated (no turbocharger) engine rated at 1800 RPM and 21 kW (28 HP) max output. It is EPA certified for stationary emergency standby use.

Does the 15REOZK have Tier 4 Final emissions?#

No. The 15REOZK is certified under EPA's stationary emergency standby program, which has less stringent requirements than the nonroad Tier 4 Final standard that applies to mobile/construction equipment. For installations requiring Tier 4 nonroad certification, the REOZT4 trailer series is the appropriate choice.

What alternator type does the 15REOZK use?#

The 15REOZK uses a brushless wound-field alternator with Kohler's PowerBoost excitation system. Sustained short-circuit current is up to 300% of rated current for up to 2 seconds. Multiple alternator options (4D3.1, 4D3.8, 4D5.0, 4D5.6) accommodate different kVA and voltage requirements.

Can the 15REOZK be used with a subbase fuel tank?#

Yes. Subbase fuel tanks are available as an option, allowing the 15REOZK to achieve extended runtime beyond the standard base configuration. Flexible fuel lines are also available for installations where the day tank is located remotely from the generator.
