Overview#
The Hipower HYW-45 is a 45 kW diesel standby generator — the top-output unit in the HYW Series — pairing a Yanmar 4TNV98T ZGGEH turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine rated EPA Tier 4 Interim with an integrated weatherproof enclosure designed for permanent outdoor installation. At 43.8 kW with three-phase 277/480V capability, the HYW-45 is the most capable outdoor-packaged unit in Hipower's compact diesel lineup, suitable for large commercial properties, multi-tenant centers, light-industrial facilities, and telecommunications infrastructure where outdoor siting is required or preferred. Built at Hipower's Olathe, Kansas manufacturing facility.
Yanmar Reliability#
At 43.8 kW, the 4TNV98T engine is operating well within its design envelope — an engine that sees 60+ kW in some construction equipment applications. That headroom translates directly to standby generator service life: the engine is not stressed, combustion is complete, and the wear curve is flat through tens of thousands of operating hours when maintained to Yanmar's schedule. Liquid cooling handles the wide ambient temperature range of outdoor installations without compromise. Yanmar's Japanese precision manufacturing, combined with Hipower's US-based factory integration as a Yanmar company, results in a generator package built to a consistent standard that independent packagers cannot match.
Right-Sized for Small Commercial#
The 45 kW outdoor weatherproof platform sits at the top of the compact HYW line, and it addresses an important commercial need: three-phase outdoor standby at a load size that fits mid-size commercial buildings without the bulk and cost of a 75–100 kW industrial unit. For multi-tenant retail centers, auto service facilities, light-manufacturing buildings, and commercial properties with constrained indoor equipment space, the HYW-45 provides the correct power level — approximately 36–42 kW of connected critical load at optimal engine loading — in an outdoor-ready package.
Service and Maintenance#
Oil and filter changes at 250 hours or 12 months. Air filter at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. Major overhaul at 12,000 hours per Yanmar's standby service specification. Outdoor weatherproof enclosure inspections at each service interval: seals, louvers, rain deflectors, cable penetrations, and corrosion check on fasteners and frame. Battery float charging is mandatory — a battery maintainer is a baseline requirement for any standby installation. Monthly exercise at minimum 30% rated load maintains engine health and confirms operational readiness.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators services HYW-45 installations across the Bay Area commercial market, including telecommunications facilities, auto dealership service departments, and multi-tenant commercial properties. The HYW-45's outdoor weatherproof design is particularly attractive when site constraints make indoor generator rooms impractical or cost-prohibitive. Our service protocol for HYW Series units at this power level includes full enclosure inspection, load bank verification of actual connected load, and battery system assessment — everything required to maintain a generator that is expected to perform when the grid fails, regardless of weather conditions.
