Overview#
The Hipower HYW-35 is a 35 kW diesel standby generator in the HYW Series, integrating a Yanmar 4TNV98 ZGGEH four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine rated EPA Tier 4 Interim with a weatherproof enclosure for permanent outdoor installation. At 35.5 kW the HYW-35 is the mid-range unit in the HYW line, suited to outdoor commercial standby applications where three-phase 277/480V power and a meaningful load capacity are needed without the footprint of a large industrial generator. Manufactured at Hipower's Olathe, Kansas facility.
Yanmar Reliability#
The 4TNV98 is Yanmar's flagship compact industrial diesel, a four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with approximately 4.1 liters of displacement that powers some of the most demanding construction and marine applications in Yanmar's global portfolio. At 35 kW, the engine operates at a conservative power fraction that supports the long 12,000-hour major overhaul interval Yanmar specifies for commercial standby service. Liquid cooling provides stable operating temperatures regardless of seasonal ambient variation — a critical attribute for outdoor-installed generators in the Bay Area's range of microclimates, from coastal fog to inland valley heat. Yanmar of America's nationwide dealer network supports parts availability and field service.
Right-Sized for Small Commercial#
The 35 kW outdoor weatherproof platform addresses an important gap in the commercial standby market: mid-size three-phase loads in facilities that cannot or should not accommodate an indoor generator room. Commercial kitchens, light-manufacturing buildings, auto service centers, and mid-size office buildings all regularly require 28–33 kW of critical load protection, and the HYW-35's outdoor packaging means the generator goes where the pad is — not where the interior floor plan allows. Correct load sizing at 75–85% keeps the 4TNV98 burning cleanly and producing maximum service life.
Service and Maintenance#
Standard 4TNV98 standby maintenance: oil and filter at 250 hours or 12 months; air filter at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. The weatherproof enclosure adds inspection checkpoints: seal integrity, louver condition, rain deflectors, and cable gland condition must be evaluated at each service interval. Battery float charging is essential year-round for outdoor units subject to seasonal temperature cycling. Monthly exercise runs under at least 30% rated load are recommended to maintain readiness and prevent fuel system degradation.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators services outdoor-installed weatherproof generator sets throughout the greater Bay Area. In the 35 kW class, our outdoor clients typically include commercial kitchen operations, auto dealerships, and mid-size office tenants in buildings where the equipment room is occupied by other mechanical systems. The HYW-35's weatherproof enclosure simplifies the installation engineering considerably — it is a complete outdoor unit rather than a generator that requires a separately engineered enclosure. Our annual service protocol for HYW Series units includes a full enclosure inspection in addition to standard engine and alternator service.
