Overview#
The Hipower HSY-40 is a 37 kW diesel standby generator in the HSY Series, powered by a Yanmar 4TNV98-family four-cylinder diesel engine with approximately 4.1 liters of displacement. At 37 kW it covers mid-size commercial applications — large medical offices, multi-suite commercial buildings, small manufacturing facilities, and light industrial controls — where three-phase 277/480V power is required and continuous uptime is business-critical. Built at Hipower's Olathe, Kansas facility with the full integration advantage of Yanmar manufacturing.
Yanmar Reliability#
The 4TNV98 engine family is one of Yanmar's most widely deployed industrial diesel platforms, used in construction equipment, marine propulsion auxiliaries, and heavy-duty generator sets where thousands of hours of reliable operation are required. The four-cylinder, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated configuration provides robust thermal stability and eliminates the turbocharger as a failure point. At 37 kW, this engine runs at a moderate power density that supports extended service intervals and long time between overhaul. Yanmar of America maintains nationwide parts distribution and dealer coverage for this engine family.
Right-Sized for Small Commercial#
The 37 kW output is particularly well matched to commercial occupancies in the 28–33 kW critical load range — a load profile common in medical-office buildings, specialty food production, and light-manufacturing cells. Running a diesel generator at 75–85% of rated capacity optimizes fuel consumption and minimizes the wet-stacking risk that afflicts generators chronically operated at light loads. OnPoint's pre-installation load surveys routinely find that clients with 37 kW critical loads are being quoted 60–80 kW machines; the HSY-40 provides the correct answer at lower capital and operating cost.
Service and Maintenance#
Yanmar's standby service intervals for the 4TNV98 class call for oil and filter changes at 250 hours or 12 months. Air filter inspection at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. The 12,000-hour major overhaul benchmark applies across the 4TNV series. Battery float charging prevents the most common no-start cause for standby generators. Monthly exercise under load — at minimum 30% rated output — flushes the fuel system, exercises the transfer switch, and provides a real-world readiness check.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators services the 37–40 kW Yanmar diesel class throughout the greater Bay Area, including commercial accounts from San Jose to San Francisco. At this power level, our clients frequently include medical office buildings, specialty manufacturers, and light-industrial facilities where three-phase power reliability is operationally critical. We provide load bank testing at commissioning and annual service intervals to confirm the generator is performing to nameplate and that the connected load remains within the unit's operational sweet spot.
