Overview#

The Hipower HNI-40 is a 40 kW standby natural gas generator powered by an Origin 3.6L turbocharged intercooled engine. The step up from the HNI-30's naturally aspirated platform, the TCIC configuration adds a turbocharger and intercooler to extract higher output from the same 3.6L displacement — a common approach in stationary gas generator design where weight and footprint are constrained.

At 40 kW, this unit covers most small commercial standby loads: multi-tenant suites, medical offices, and hospitality spaces where an existing natural gas service eliminates the fuel storage and compliance burden of diesel. Combined with CARB certification, the HNI-40 is a clean-sheet solution for California permitting.

Engine Platform#

The Origin 3.6L TCIC is a purpose-built spark-ignited stationary engine running at 1800 RPM. Turbocharging raises the power density without increasing displacement, keeping the package compact. The intercooler reduces intake charge temperature, improving volumetric efficiency and protecting engine components from heat fatigue at continuous standby operation.

Maintenance is straightforward: spark plugs, oil changes, and periodic turbocharger inspection. No diesel particulate filter, no DEF system, no high-pressure fuel injection.

CARB-Certified for California#

The HNI-40 carries CARB certification as part of the HNI series. This is the key differentiator for California projects — the air district can permit the unit under standard rules without the additional review burden that non-certified engines require. For projects in Bay Area, Sacramento Valley, or San Joaquin air districts, CARB certification removes a common scheduling risk from the approval timeline.

Service and Maintenance#

  • Oil and filter: 1000 hours or 12 months
  • Spark plugs: 1000 hours
  • Air filter: 500 hours
  • Turbocharger inspection: Annually — check oil supply and return lines, boost pressure, and wastegate operation
  • Gas line inspection: Annually
  • Major overhaul: 30,000 hours

Our Service Experience#

OnPoint Generators maintains Hipower HNI units across Northern California. Natural gas units in light-commercial buildings represent a significant share of our service base — gas service eliminates on-site fuel management and integrates directly with the building's existing utility infrastructure.

Estimate runtime for the Hipower HNI-40

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

420,000 BTU/hr420.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Service intervals

Manufacturer-recommended intervals for the Hipower HNI-40 under standby duty. Field intervals may differ based on load profile, ambient conditions, and fuel quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of natural gas over diesel for standby power?
Natural gas eliminates on-site fuel storage, delivery logistics, and SPCC compliance. Fuel comes from the utility line with the same continuity as the building's gas service. For California facilities with gas meters, this simplifies both the installation and the air district permitting process compared to diesel.
Is the HNI-40 CARB certified?
Yes. The HNI series holds CARB certification across 30–1000 kW. The HNI-40 qualifies for standard California permit-by-rule without requiring an air district variance.
What is the difference between the HNI-30 and HNI-40?
The HNI-40 uses the same Origin 3.6L platform but in turbocharged intercooled (TCIC) configuration, producing 40 kW versus 30 kW on the naturally aspirated variant. The turbocharger adds a periodic maintenance item but enables higher output from the same displacement.
Can the HNI-40 run on LP?
Yes. Available in NG, LP, and dual-fuel configurations.
How do service intervals compare to diesel?
Oil changes at 1000 hours or 12 months — extended relative to diesel. Spark plugs at 1000 hours replace diesel injection as the primary wear consumable. No DPF, DEF, or fuel filter servicing required.
Who services Hipower units in NorCal?
