Overview#
The Gillette SP-410 is a 40-kilowatt natural gas (41 kW on LPG) standby generator designed for mid-range commercial applications: restaurants, retail buildings, multi-family residential complexes, and small offices that need whole-building backup power on piped natural gas. At 40 kW, this unit comfortably handles HVAC systems, commercial kitchen equipment, lighting, and essential building loads during an outage.
Like all Gillette SP Series generators, the SP-410 is built with industry-standard name-brand components: a PSI 4.3L V6 engine, Stamford UCI224D alternator, and Deep Sea Electronics DSE 7420 MKII controller. Every unit is assembled and 100% load-tested at Gillette's facility in Elkhart, Indiana. For Northern California commercial customers who prefer non-proprietary parts and open-architecture serviceability, the SP-410 fills the 40 kW gap between smaller residential-class generators and larger commercial units.
The PSI engine platform#
The SP-410 is powered by PSI's 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine — 262 cubic inches of displacement from six cylinders in a 90-degree vee configuration. This is a purpose-built industrial gas engine, not a converted automotive or diesel block. PSI designed the 4.3L specifically for stationary generator duty on natural gas and LP fuel.
The engine features an electronic governor with isochronous frequency regulation (1/4% steady-state), delivering 62 brake horsepower on natural gas at 1800 RPM — well-matched to the 40 kW generator output with reserve capacity for transient loading. Electronic fuel injection maintains a consistent air-fuel ratio across the load range, and the engine is catalytic converter compatible for sites requiring additional emissions control. Compared to Kohler's proprietary engine platforms at similar kW, the PSI V6 offers the advantage of open-market parts availability through industrial distributors.
Our service experience#
We service PSI engines across multiple generator brands in our territory, and the 4.3L V6 is a well-known platform. The DSE 7420 MKII controller is identical to what we see on many other commercial generator brands — no proprietary software, no dealer-locked diagnostics, and freely downloadable configuration software from the DSE website.
Parts availability in Northern California is solid for the PSI and Stamford components, both available through industrial distributors. Common consumables (spark plugs, oil filters, air filters) cross-reference to widely available part numbers. There is no local Gillette dealer in our area, so we recommend customers keep critical spares on-site: a set of spark plugs, oil filters, and a replacement battery. The 40 kW class hits a sweet spot for many commercial buildings, and the SP-410's open-component architecture ensures you are never locked into a single service provider for the life of the unit.
