Overview#
The Gillette SP-620 is a 60-kilowatt natural gas (62 kW on LPG, three-phase) standby generator built for mid-size commercial applications: multi-tenant retail, schools, houses of worship, restaurants with heavy kitchen loads, and multi-family residential buildings that need full-building backup on piped natural gas. At 60 kW, this unit handles substantial loads — multiple HVAC systems, commercial kitchen equipment, elevators, and lighting — making it a workhorse for buildings that have outgrown smaller 25-40 kW units.
Like all Gillette SP Series generators, the SP-620 uses industry-standard name-brand components: a PSI 5.7L V8 engine, Stamford UCI224F alternator, and Deep Sea Electronics DSE 7420 MKII controller. Every unit is assembled and 100% load-tested at Gillette's factory in Elkhart, Indiana. For Northern California commercial customers who need a 60 kW gas standby without proprietary lock-in, the SP-620 delivers proven reliability with open-architecture serviceability.
The PSI engine platform#
The SP-620 is powered by PSI's 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine — 350 cubic inches of displacement from eight cylinders in a 90-degree vee configuration. This is PSI's workhorse industrial gas engine, purpose-built for stationary generator duty on natural gas and LP fuel rather than converted from an automotive or diesel platform.
The 5.7L V8 produces 100 brake horsepower on natural gas at 1800 RPM, providing a comfortable reserve margin above the 60 kW generator output for transient motor-starting loads. The electronic governor delivers isochronous frequency regulation at 1/4% steady-state, while electronic fuel injection maintains consistent air-fuel ratio across the full load range. The engine is catalytic converter compatible for sites requiring additional emissions control. At this kW class, the PSI 5.7L V8 competes directly against Kohler's proprietary engine platforms, with the key differentiator being open-market parts availability through industrial distributors.
Our service experience#
We service PSI engines across multiple generator brands in our Northern California territory, and the 5.7L V8 is the most common PSI platform we encounter. The DSE 7420 MKII controller is the same unit we see on Gillette, Blue Star, and other commercial brands — no proprietary software or dealer-locked diagnostics. Configuration software is freely downloadable from the DSE website, and any technician with Modbus experience can monitor and configure the unit.
Parts availability is solid for both PSI and Stamford components through industrial distributors. Common consumables (spark plugs, oil filters, air filters) cross-reference to widely available part numbers. Since there is no local Gillette dealer in our area, we recommend customers keep critical spares on-site: a full set of eight spark plugs, oil filters, and a replacement battery. The 60 kW class is a popular commercial power range and the SP-620's open-component architecture means you are never locked into a single service provider for maintenance, repairs, or parts.
