Overview#
The Hipower HRNG-85 is a 66 kW trailer-mounted natural gas generator — the entry-level model in Hipower's HRNG mobile natural gas series (85–1250 kVA). Unlike conventional diesel towable generators, the HRNG-85 connects to the deployment site's permanent natural gas supply rather than carrying an on-board fuel tank.
This fundamental difference defines the HRNG's use case: it is a mobile platform for sites with gas service, not a fuel-independent portable generator. Typical applications include construction sites where the building under construction has active gas service, commercial buildings requiring temporary bypass power during electrical switchgear work, events at venues with gas infrastructure, and data centers needing outage coverage from a gas-fueled source.
CARB certification enables the HRNG-85 for California temporary and emergency standby applications without source test or air district variance. The 66 kW output covers small-to-mid commercial loads: lighting, HVAC zones, IT infrastructure, and food service equipment.
PSI Engine Platform#
The HRNG-85 is powered by a PSI natural gas engine running at 1800 RPM. PSI supplies spark-ignited engines to multiple standby generator manufacturers and maintains a broad parts and service network across North America. The specific PSI model for this output class is a PSI 8.1 LNA — a naturally aspirated 8.1-liter gaseous engine from Power Solutions International, rated for standby natural gas service. The spark-ignited platform requires no diesel particulate filter, no diesel exhaust fluid, and no diesel fuel management.
Trailer-Mounted Design#
The HRNG series is built on road-legal trailer frames with proper lighting and safety equipment. The HRNG-85's compact size allows deployment in locations where larger trailer generators cannot fit. Connection to the site gas supply is via flexible connector to the unit's gas train.
CARB-Certified for California#
Hipower's HRNG series holds CARB certification for California natural gas temporary standby. The HRNG-85 qualifies for California permit-by-rule in temporary standby applications.
Service and Maintenance#
- Oil and filter: 1000 hours or 12 months
- Spark plugs: 1000 hours

- Gas connection inspection: Before each deployment
- Trailer and road lights: Inspect at each deployment
- Major overhaul: 30,000 hours
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators provides support for Hipower HRNG natural gas trailer generators in Northern California. Gas-fueled towable generators are appropriate for construction and event applications where gas service is available and diesel fuel logistics are undesirable.
