Overview#
The Hipower HJW-65 is a 65 kW diesel standby generator from the HJW Industrial series, assembled at Hipower Systems' Lenexa, Kansas facility. It is powered by a John Deere 4045HF280-74, a 4.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel producing 99 horsepower at 1,800 rpm. The Stamford UCI 224 G alternator provides single-bearing four-pole brushless output with Class H insulation. The set is EPA Tier 3 certified and carries UL 2200 and CSA listings.
Three-phase standby output is 65 kW at 120/208V or 277/480V. Single-phase output is 47 kW at 120/240V. A 347/600V configuration is available (not UL 2200 certified at that voltage). Prime power rating is 58.5 kW three-phase for applications requiring continuous generator power.
The HJW-65 targets light commercial and small-building standby applications: retail shops, small medical offices, telecom nodes, water treatment pump stations, and similar loads where the main distribution panel is under 125 amps at 480V.
John Deere Engine Platform#
The 4045HF280-74 is a member of John Deere's 4045 engine family — 4.5 liters, four cylinders in-line, with turbocharged induction at 99 gross horsepower. The HF designation indicates a higher-output configuration compared to the TF series used in the HJW-55, achieved through a higher-flow turbocharger and optimized fuel calibration. Displacement, bore, stroke, and the fundamental engine architecture are identical across the 4045 family, meaning service tooling and many wear parts cross between variants.
North American dealer coverage for the 4045 engine is comprehensive. John Deere's dealer network — augmented by independent shops experienced with agricultural and construction equipment — means same-day parts availability in virtually every metropolitan market in California.
Hipower Manufacturing#
Hipower Systems designs and manufactures complete generator sets at its Lenexa, Kansas facility. Every unit exits the factory with a test certificate documenting full-load performance. The HJW-65 skid uses heavy-duty steel with resilient anti-vibration isolators. An optional sound-attenuated enclosure with rock-wool insulation reduces noise to 68 dBA at 23 feet, making the enclosed set suitable for noise-sensitive commercial sites.
The base configuration meets NFPA 110 Level 1 requirements when installed with required accessories and complies with UL 2200, CSA, and ISO 8528-5 standards.
Service and Maintenance#
Oil and filter changes are specified at 250 hours or 12 months. Fuel filter replacement is due at 500 hours or annually — a critical maintenance item in standby service, where extended storage can allow water accumulation and microbial growth in the fuel system. Air cleaner elements should be inspected at 500 hours.
The Stamford UCI 224 alternator is a low-maintenance unit requiring periodic connection inspections and insulation resistance checks. Starting battery health is the single most common failure point on standby generators; float charging between monthly exercise runs is essential.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators services Hipower HJW series equipment throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. The John Deere 4045 engine is one of the most familiar platforms in our service fleet — straightforward to diagnose and quick to turn around with locally available parts. We perform complete preventive maintenance programs on HJW series units for commercial property managers, telecommunications carriers, and healthcare facilities.
For buyers evaluating a used HJW-65, OnPoint offers pre-purchase inspections including compression testing, load bank run, and fuel system condition assessment. Contact us to discuss service contracts or one-time commissioning support.
