Overview#
The Hipower HJW-85 is an 80 kW diesel standby generator from the HJW Industrial series, built at Hipower Systems' facility in Olathe, Kansas. The generator set is powered by a John Deere 4045HF285-94, a 4.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged diesel producing 126 horsepower at 1,800 rpm, paired with a Stamford UCI 274 D alternator. EPA Tier 3 certified, the set carries UL 2200 and CSA listings.
Note: the model designation "HJW-85" refers to the product name; the actual standby power output per the OEM spec sheet is 80 kW (three-phase). Single-phase output is 43.2 kW at 120/240V. The HJW-85 is appropriate for mid-sized commercial standby applications: small multi-tenant buildings, larger retail operations, light industrial facilities, and pump stations with 150-200A service at 480V.
John Deere Engine Platform#
The 4045HF285-94 is a member of the well-established John Deere 4045 engine family — the same foundational 4.5-liter, four-cylinder platform used across the 55, 65, and 85 kW HJW models. The HF285 designation identifies a high-flow turbocharged variant tuned for 126 hp at generator duty cycle. All 4045-family engines share fundamental architecture, which simplifies multi-unit fleet maintenance when a site has HJW sets of different output classes.
John Deere's dealer network provides parts and service in every California county. Oil filters, fuel injector components, and belts are stocked at multiple distributors in every major NorCal metro area, supporting rapid turnaround on preventive maintenance and unscheduled repairs.
Hipower Manufacturing#
Hipower Systems assembles and tests every HJW generator set at its Kansas facility. The production process involves computer-aided design, exhaustive prototype testing, and full-load factory testing on each production unit, with test certificates available on request. The HJW-85 uses a heavy-duty steel skid base with resilient anti-vibration isolators. Optional sound-attenuated enclosures bring noise levels to acceptable thresholds for commercial and suburban industrial sites.
The HJW-85 base set meets NFPA 110 Level 1 requirements when installed with appropriate accessories and is UL 2200 listed — a requirement for most California building permit packages.
Service and Maintenance#
John Deere oil and filter changes are due at 250 hours or 12 months. Fuel filter replacement is recommended at 500 hours or annually; for standby units seeing minimal runtime, the annual interval is the practical governing schedule. The air cleaner uses a medium-duty dry element rated for 500-hour inspection.
Stamford UCI 274 alternators require periodic connection inspection and insulation resistance testing. Anti-condensation heaters, where fitted, should be verified operational at annual service visits. Float-charging the starting battery between monthly exercises is essential to reliable standby operation.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators serves commercial and light industrial customers throughout the Bay Area and Northern California with preventive maintenance, load bank testing, and emergency repair on Hipower HJW series units. The John Deere 4045 engine platform is one of the most straightforward in this output class to maintain — familiar to any qualified diesel technician, with parts available locally within hours.
The 80 kW output range is well suited for NorCal small business standby: a typical small urgent care clinic, grocery market, or data closet for a multi-tenant office building falls squarely in this power band. Contact OnPoint to discuss a maintenance program or pre-purchase inspection.
