Overview#
The Gillette SPMI-1M is a 1,000-kilowatt (1 MW) stationary diesel standby generator on Mitsubishi's S12H V12 platform — 37.1L displacement, 1,528 bhp at standby. It bridges the SPMI-8000 (800 kW, S12A2) and the SPMI-1.5M (1,500 kW, S16R). Stamford AVK S6DE311 alternator with PMG excitation, DSE 7420 MKII controller.
At 1 MW diesel, this is the standard backup power for large data centers, major hospitals, and industrial facilities requiring full-building standby.
Mitsubishi S12A2 vs. S12H: 800 kW to 1 MW#
The SPMI-8000 and SPMI-1M both use 12-cylinder engines but at different displacement:
| Spec | SPMI-8000 (S12A2) | SPMI-1M (S12H) |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 33.9L | 37.1L |
| Bore × Stroke | 5.91" × 6.30" | 5.91" × 6.89" |
| Standby bhp | 1,207 | 1,528 |
| Standby kW | 800 | 1,000 |
| Open weight | 18,950 lbs | 22,675 lbs |
The S12H achieves 25% more output through stroke extension — same bore, longer throw, more displacement per cycle. Both are V12 turbocharged and water-to-air aftercooled.
1 MW diesel standby — installation scale#
At 22,675 lbs (open), the SPMI-1M requires:
- Structural concrete pad engineered for this load
- A 25-ton crane for placement
- Dedicated fuel storage (2,000-5,000 gallons typical)
- Dedicated electrical switchgear room
- Exhaust routing for a V12 diesel at 1,528 bhp
This is a project-level installation requiring mechanical, structural, and electrical engineering coordination.
Our service experience#
The Mitsubishi S12H at 1 MW is a facility-class generator we service under structured maintenance contracts. Annual full-load bank testing, semi-annual fuel system service, and quarterly battery testing are baseline requirements. The dual Bosch P-type injection system requires clean fuel — fuel polishing is mandatory for standby installations where the generator may sit for weeks between exercises.
