The Hipower HYW-20 is an 18 kW diesel standby generator in the HYW Series, which pairs Yanmar diesel power with a weatherproof enclosure for outdoor installation. The weatherproofed package eliminates the need for a dedicated generator room or outbuilding, making the HYW-20 suitable for outdoor pad installations at small commercial properties — parking lot utility pads, rooftop installations, or equipment yards where a bare open-frame unit cannot be safely installed. Powered by a Yanmar 4TNV88 BGGEH four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel engine rated EPA Tier 4 Interim, and manufactured in Olathe, Kansas.
Yanmar Reliability#
Yanmar's small diesel engines have logged decades of service in outdoor industrial applications — construction equipment, agricultural machinery, marine auxiliaries — where UV exposure, temperature cycling, and moisture ingress are constant challenges. The HYW Series weatherproof enclosure adds a further layer of protection, shielding the electrical components, air intake, and exhaust from the elements while maintaining adequate ventilation for liquid-cooled operation. Service and Maintenance#
Oil and filter changes at 250 hours or 12 months. Air filter at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. Outdoor installations require additional weatherproofing checks at service intervals: inspect enclosure seals, louver condition, and any cable entry points for moisture ingress. Battery float charging is essential — outdoor temperature cycling accelerates battery discharge and degradation. Monthly exercise runs under load maintain engine readiness and flush condensation from the fuel system.
