Overview#

The Generac SG050 is a 50 kW standby industrial natural gas generator set powered by Generac's 4.5L turbocharged inline-4 spark-ignited engine. It is EPA certified for stationary emergency applications and available in single-phase and three-phase configurations. The genset features the Generac Power Zone Pro controller with a 4.3-inch color touchscreen display.

Engine and alternator#

The SG050 uses Generac's 4.5L (275 cubic inch) inline-4 turbocharged spark-ignited engine, the same platform used across the SG060 and SG070 with different output tuning. The engine features cast iron cylinder head and liners, forged steel crankshaft, hydraulic roller lifters, and electronic governing. The 4.5L turbocharged platform is designed specifically for gaseous fuels, with intake and exhaust valves and valve seats optimized for the higher exhaust temperatures produced by natural gas combustion.

The alternator is a Generac 4-pole revolving-field design with Class H insulation on both rotor and stator, featuring synchronous brushless excitation and full digital voltage regulation.

Applications#

The SG050 fits commercial and light industrial standby applications where the 50 kW power class is appropriate — small office buildings, retail spaces, light manufacturing, and facilities requiring code-compliant backup power under NFPA 110 Level 1.

Our service experience#

The 4.5L turbocharged platform in the 50 kW tuning bridges the naturally aspirated 45 kW model and the higher-output turbocharged 60–70 kW variants. Turbocharger condition should be monitored starting at 10,000 hours; spark plug replacement at 1,000-hour intervals is the primary recurring maintenance item. Exhaust temperatures in this engine family are in the 1,300–1,360 degree F range, which requires proper exhaust system design and clearance to combustibles.

Estimate runtime for the Generac SG050

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

525,000 BTU/hr525.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SG050 use?
The SG050 uses a Generac-manufactured 4.5L (275 cubic inch) inline-4 turbocharged spark-ignited engine, the same engine family used across the SG045–SG080 power range with varying output tuning. The engine runs at 1,800 RPM and is designed specifically for natural gas and propane vapor fuels.
What voltages does the SG050 support?
The SG050 supports single-phase 120/240V and three-phase configurations in 120/208V, 120/240V, 277/480V, and 346/600V. Contact Generac or an authorized dealer for amperage ratings at each voltage.
What fuel pressure does the SG050 require?
As a 4.5L turbocharged SG-series generator, the SG050 requires approximately 5–14 inches of water column (1.2–3.5 kPa) for natural gas operation, consistent with other models in this engine family.
