Overview#

The Generac SD080 is an 80-kilowatt industrial diesel standby generator powered by an Iveco/FPT 4.5-liter turbocharged and aftercooled inline-four engine. Rated at 80 kW standby and 72 kW prime (100/90 kVA), the SD080 represents the upper end of the Iveco 4.5L platform in Generac's SD Series -- the same engine as the SD060 calibrated to a higher output. BMEP reaches 210 psi at the 80 kW rating, and exhaust temperature is 887°F (475°C) post-turbo. The generator is EPA Certified for Stationary Emergency applications.

Generac pairs the Iveco 4.5L with their 390 mm alternator frame featuring Class H insulation, synchronous brushless excitation, THD less than 3%, and TIF less than 50. The Digital H control panel provides NFPA 110 Level I and II programmable operation, Modbus communications, and a 7-day programmable exerciser. The engine block heater (1500W, 120/240V) is standard equipment, as is the closed coolant recovery system. The belt-driven water pump design shared with the SD060 requires regular belt inspection.

At 80 kW, this unit serves larger commercial standby loads: large hotels, full-service hospitals and medical facilities with multiple critical circuits, larger data rooms, multi-tenant commercial buildings, and light industrial facilities with variable load profiles. The single-phase 120/240V configuration at 333 amps provides capacity for large single-phase services, and the 277/480V three-phase at 120 amps covers most commercial distribution systems.

Our Service Experience#

The SD080 is the highest-output variant of the Iveco/FPT 4.5L engine in Generac's SD lineup. All service practices that apply to the SD060 apply equally here: regular belt inspection for the water pump drive, 13.6-quart crankcase requiring deliberate oil change scheduling, and Stanadyne fuel injection sensitive to fuel quality degradation. We inspect exhaust flex connectors at every annual visit and replace at the first sign of cracking -- the 887°F exhaust temperature is demanding on flex connector materials.

At 6.3 gph full load, a 300-gallon sub-base tank provides approximately 47 hours of runtime at standby load. For facilities requiring 72-hour minimum runtime under NFPA 110 Class 72, the 589-gallon tank option is required (approximately 93 hours at full standby load).

The SD080's 232,270 BTU/hr heat rejection to coolant is substantially higher than the SD060 (123,000 BTU/hr) despite sharing the same engine block -- reflecting the higher thermal load at 80 kW calibration. Ventilation calculations for enclosed installations must account for the full heat rejection value, and the 6,360 cfm inlet air requirement drives enclosure sizing.

Frequently Asked Questions#

How does the SD080 compare to the SD060? Both use the Iveco/FPT 4.5L inline-4 engine with identical block dimensions. The SD080 is calibrated to 80 kW standby versus 60 kW, with higher fuel consumption (6.3 vs 4.8 gph at full load) and higher heat rejection to coolant (232,270 vs 123,000 BTU/hr). Exhaust temperatures are similar (887°F vs 930°F). Physical dimensions are essentially identical. The SD080 provides 33% more standby capacity within the same installation footprint, making it worth considering when a project is on the boundary between the two ratings.

What enclosure options are available for the SD080? Weather-protective and Level 1/Level 2 sound-attenuated enclosures are available in steel and aluminum. The Level 2 sound-attenuated enclosure (no tank) measures 112 x 41 x 69 inches in steel. The SD080 shares the same enclosure line as the SD060. IBC seismic certification is an available engineered option.

Can the SD080 handle large motor starting loads? Yes. With Upsize 2 (130 kW alternator), the SD080 can start 348 sKVA at 480 VAC with a 30% voltage dip, and 174 sKVA at 208/240 VAC. This covers large HVAC compressor starting and multiple-motor applications. Consult load calculations for facilities with multiple large motors starting simultaneously, particularly where soft starters are not installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SD080 use?
The Generac SD080 uses an Iveco/FPT 4.5-liter, four-cylinder in-line turbocharged and aftercooled diesel engine running at 1800 RPM. The engine has a bore of 4.1 in (105 mm), stroke of 5.2 in (132 mm), 17.5:1 compression ratio, Stanadyne fuel injection, and a gear-driven oil pump. Crankcase capacity is 13.6 liters (14.4 qts). This is the same 4.5L platform as the SD060, tuned to 80 kW standby.
What is the fuel consumption of the Generac SD080?
At standby rating, the SD080 consumes 6.3 gallons per hour at full load (100%), 5.2 gph at 75% load, 3.7 gph at 50% load, and 2.1 gph at 25% load. Total fuel pump flow (combustion plus return) is 13.6 gph. The fuel pump lift is rated at 3 feet.
What voltages are available for the SD080?
The SD080 is available in single-phase 120/240 VAC (333 amps at 1.0 pf) and three-phase configurations: 120/208 VAC (278 amps), 120/240 VAC (241 amps), 277/480 VAC (120 amps), and 346/600 VAC (96 amps), all at 0.8 power factor.
