Overview#

The Generac MD600 is a 600 kW modular diesel standby generator system powered by a Perkins 18.1-liter turbocharged and aftercooled inline-six engine. Part of Generac's Modular Power System (MPS) platform, the MD600 is factory-configured with integrated paralleling controls for plug-and-play scalability. The Perkins 18.1L engine platform is shared with the SD600 and SD750, providing a well-proven foundation in the 600-750 kW power class.

Two MD600 modules provide 1,200 kW of total capacity with N+1 redundancy -- comparable to an SD1250 but with the ability to service one unit while the other continues providing backup power. The modular approach also simplifies transportation and rigging compared to megawatt-class single-engine gensets. The MD600 is well-suited for data center, healthcare, and campus environments where uptime requirements demand redundant power architectures.

Our Service Experience#

The MD600 shares the Perkins 18.1L platform with the SD600 and SD750, a well-known engine in our service territory. At 600 kW per module, fuel logistics and ventilation planning for multi-unit installations are important engineering considerations. We recommend independent load bank testing of each module annually, in addition to parallel operation testing, to verify that every unit can independently carry its rated load. Coolant system monitoring is particularly important on the 18.1L platform at higher output ratings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the MD600 and the SD600?
The MD600 is a modular (factory-paralleled) system designed for scalable, redundant power architectures. It uses the same Perkins 18.1L engine as the SD600 but comes factory-configured with integrated paralleling controls, enabling plug-and-play expansion with additional MD units. The SD600 is a single-unit standalone generator at the same power rating. The modular approach provides N+1 redundancy, easier installation logistics, and the ability to service one unit while another continues operating.
What is the fuel consumption of the MD600?
The MD600 uses the same Perkins 18.1L engine as the SD600. At standby rating, fuel consumption is approximately 41.4 gallons per hour at full load, 35.6 gph at 75% load, 28.2 gph at 50% load, and 18.4 gph at 25% load per module.
What voltages are available?
The MD600 is available in three-phase configurations at 277/480V and 346/600V, both at 60 Hz.
