Remote Monitoring Platform
Gen-Tracker
Works on any generator — regardless of age, brand, or controller.
Manufacturer
Generator Solutions, Inc.
Founded
2001
Headquarters
St. Paul, Minnesota
Ownership
Privately held; U.S. domestic supply chain
Generator Solutions was founded in 2001 by two Master Electricians who were among the first startup dealers authorized by Kohler. After noticing that standby units most often fail during routine weekly exercise cycles — not during active blackouts — they built an event-driven telemetry platform to catch those failures in real time, then divested their contracting and service divisions to focus entirely on the technology.
The company keeps a domestic supply chain: boards fabricated in Chicago, automated assembly in Wisconsin, and final assembly, flashing, and testing in Minnesota — which supports tight quality control and direct engineering support for its dealer network.
How it works
ATS-centric monitoring that works on any generator
Instead of relying on the generator controller, Gen-Tracker's GTU wires physical AC voltage sensors to the utility, emergency, and load sides of the automatic transfer switch. Comparing actual voltage presence against start-contact activation reveals faults controller-only monitors miss — a generator that runs during exercise but fails to transfer load, or a tripped main breaker — on any unit regardless of age or brand.
Hardware
Universal GTU Series
ATS-focused monitor with three physical AC voltage sensors, 4 digital alarm inputs, start-contact tracking, 2 digital outputs, and 3 onboard relays for remote start and load transfer. Powered from a plug-in transformer or the starting batteries.
GTX expansion board
Adds a Modbus serial connection to the GTU for reading native diagnostics on newer digital controllers.
MBX Series (GT-MBX-485 / -232)
Cellular-only device that installs inside the enclosure and plugs directly into the controller's Modbus port to stream native faults, pre-alarms, and diagnostic codes.
Connectivity
- Cellular (multi-carrier subscription bundled in the yearly agreement)
- Ethernet
- WiFi
- Analog phone line (POTS) — reuses existing wiring where cellular can't penetrate (subterranean, deep basements, shielded structures)
Portal
Gen-Tracker portal
Built for high-volume service dispatchers and compliance managers, with event-driven notifications and automated reporting.
Where it's strongest
- Universal by design — works on any generator, any age, any brand
- ATS voltage sensing catches failed-transfer and breaker faults others miss
- Immune to OEM software updates that lock down Modbus access
- Widest connectivity mix, including WiFi, Ethernet, and analog phone line
Best fit
Property managers, university campuses, and municipalities standardizing one platform across a mixed bag of new digital and older legacy generators — or sites where cellular simply won't reach.
When to consider another platform
If you need satellite-grade redundancy or the deepest possible controller diagnostics on a modern fleet, OmniMetrix goes further.
