Overview#
The Hipower HFW-300 is a 300 kW stationary standby diesel generator powered by the FPT Industrial C13 engine — a 12.9-liter turbocharged inline-6 — paired with a Stamford alternator. Built at Hipower's Olathe, Kansas facility, the HFW-300 marks the transition to FPT's largest stationary inline-6 engine family, providing substantial displacement headroom for reliable 300 kW standby service. The unit carries EPA Tier 4 Final certification and targets mission-critical applications — data center campuses, hospital facilities, large industrial plants, and multi-building commercial complexes — where 300 kW of three-phase power with rigorous emissions compliance is required.
FPT Industrial Engine Platform#
The C13 is a 12.9-liter turbocharged inline-6 manufactured by FPT Industrial (CNH Industrial). It is FPT's heavy-duty inline-6 platform, deployed across commercial truck, bus, and power generation markets worldwide. At 300 kW standby, the C13 is operating well within its rated envelope, with considerable displacement reserve that benefits cold-start reliability and long-term component life — the engine is simply not working as hard per unit of displacement as smaller-bore alternatives at equivalent output.
FPT's Tier 4 Final aftertreatment for the C13 employs SCR for NOx control and DPF for particulate management. These are factory-integrated, EPA-certified systems — not retrofitted aftertreatment — which means the HFW-300 arrives with the documentation needed for California CARB district permit applications. The combined SCR+DPF system achieves the NOx and PM limits that California's South Coast and Bay Area air districts require for new stationary diesel engine permits.
FPT's North American commercial engine dealer network serves the C13 platform directly. Unlike smaller engine families where the agricultural dealer channel provides secondary parts coverage, the C13's commercial truck heritage means FPT dealer coverage is concentrated in commercial vehicle and industrial markets — areas well-represented in California's major urban and port regions.
Hipower Design Advantages#
The HFW-300 is built to NFPA 110 Level I/II compliance, supporting the most demanding life-safety classifications for hospitals, emergency response centers, and essential government facilities. Three-phase output at 120/208V, 277/480V, and 347/600V covers the full range of industrial and commercial distribution configurations in North America.
Sound attenuation through Level 2 enclosures meets the requirements of California's strictest urban noise ordinances. IBC seismic certification as an option makes the HFW-300 compliant with California OSHPD and DSA requirements for hospital and government critical facility projects. Optional paralleling via DSE8610 controller is particularly valuable at 300 kW — two units in parallel deliver 600 kW with N+1 redundancy at lower cost per kW than a single 600 kW generator.
Service and Maintenance#
The FPT C13's generous 12.9-liter displacement at 300 kW means the engine runs comfortably within its thermal design envelope, which is favorable for interval compliance. The 500-hour or 12-month oil change schedule applies, and the displacement headroom means the 12-month calendar trigger is often the relevant control for installations that don't approach 500 hours annually.
Annual load bank testing to full 300 kW output is essential for mission-critical standby. At this output level, the consequences of undetected performance degradation — whether from fuel system issues, turbocharger wear, or alternator problems — are operationally significant. A full-load test documents that the HFW-300 can carry its rated output for the sustained periods required during extended outages.
Fuel quality management remains the leading preventive maintenance discipline. Annual fuel polishing, water separator replacement, and biocide treatment are standard for 300 kW standby units in California's varying climate conditions.
Our Service Experience#
OnPoint Generators services HFW-300 units across the Bay Area and Northern California, including large data center and healthcare accounts where 300 kW standby reliability is a business continuity requirement. FPT C13 parts support through FPT Industrial's commercial engine dealer network provides our field technicians with efficient access to engine-specific components. EPA Tier 4 Final certification enables new HFW-300 installations to proceed through California's ATC and PTO process without the exemption complexity of older Tier 3 equipment, and OnPoint provides full NFPA 110, OSHPD, and seismic permit documentation packages for qualified commercial and industrial projects.
