Overview#

The Generac SD040 is a 40-kilowatt industrial diesel standby generator powered by Generac's 3.4-liter turbocharged and aftercooled inline-four engine. Positioned between the SD035 and SD050, the SD040 fills a specific capacity requirement for facilities that need slightly more than 35 kW but don't require the full 50 kW output. Both the SD035 and SD040 share the same Generac 3.4L engine platform, with the SD040 rated at a higher output point.

The SD040 pairs the 3.4L engine with a Generac alternator featuring Class H insulation and a Digital H control panel with NFPA 110 Level I and II programmability. Like all SD Series units, enclosure options range from open skid to sound-attenuated aluminum, and sub-base fuel tank configurations are available for extended runtime.

Our Service Experience#

The SD040 is mechanically identical to the SD035 in terms of engine platform and service requirements. The 3.4L engine at 40 kW operates at a slightly higher BMEP than the 35 kW rating, which means marginally higher exhaust temperatures and thermal loading. This has no practical impact on service intervals but reinforces the importance of the 120 VAC coolant heater — verify function at every visit. Fuel quality management is the same as all SD Series diesel units: annual polishing for standby installations, 500-hour fuel filter intervals, and weekly exercise under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SD040 use?
The Generac SD040 uses the same Generac-branded 3.4-liter, four-cylinder in-line turbocharged and aftercooled diesel engine as the SD035, running at 1800 RPM. At 40 kW, the engine operates at a slightly higher output point than the SD035 but remains well within its rated capacity.
What is the fuel consumption of the Generac SD040?
At standby rating, the SD040 consumes approximately 3.6 gallons per hour at full load, 2.7 gph at 75% load, and 1.8 gph at 50% load. This is marginally higher than the SD035 due to the higher power output from the same 3.4L engine platform.
What voltages are available for the SD040?
The SD040 is available in single-phase 120/240V and three-phase configurations: 120/208V, 120/240V, 277/480V, and 346/600V at 60 Hz. Both single-phase and three-phase options are available for this power class.
