Overview#

The Blue Star VD500-01 is a 500-kilowatt EPA Tier 2 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TAD1641GE-B — the mid-range variant of the updated TAD1640/1641/1642GE-B engine family. This is a current-production active model.

The TAD1641GE-B is a different 16.1L design from the TAD1650GE used in the VD450-01, featuring EMS 2.4 electronic management, dual-frequency switching, and camshaft dampers for reduced noise and vibration.

The TAD1641GE-B shares oil and coolant capacities (12.7 gal oil, 15.9 gal coolant) with the other 16.1L models, and the EMS 2.4 electronic management system provides the same CAN J1939 diagnostic interface. The self de-aerating fuel system is a notable service advantage — when replacing fuel filters, all fuel stays in the engine, eliminating the need for manual priming. The 94 dBA open-skid sound level almost always requires an enclosed installation for commercial sites.
