500 kW Tier 2 diesel standby generator from Blue Star Power Systems. Volvo Penta TAD1641GE-B 16.1L inline-six with DSE DCP7310 controller, 208-600V output.
The Blue Star VD500-01 is a 500-kilowatt EPA Tier 2 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TAD1641GE-B — the mid-range variant of the updated TAD1640/1641/1642GE-B engine family. This is a current-production active model.
The TAD1641GE-B is a different 16.1L design from the TAD1650GE used in the VD450-01, featuring EMS 2.4 electronic management, dual-frequency switching, and camshaft dampers for reduced noise and vibration.
The VD500-01 sits between the VD450-01 and VD550-01:
VD450-01 (450 kW, Volvo TAD1650GE 16.1L) — 50 kW less, EPA Tier 3 certified, but lower altitude ceiling (3,280 ft). Choose this if Tier 3 is required or 450 kW meets the load study.
VD550-01 (550 kW, Volvo TAD1642GE-B 16.1L) — same engine family at a higher rating, same physical footprint. Choose this if the load study shows peak demand between 500-550 kW.
VD600-03 (600 kW, Volvo Penta) — next major step up for sites needing more than 550 kW.
The TAD1641GE-B shares oil and coolant capacities (12.7 gal oil, 15.9 gal coolant) with the other 16.1L models, and the EMS 2.4 electronic management system provides the same CAN J1939 diagnostic interface. The self de-aerating fuel system is a notable service advantage — when replacing fuel filters, all fuel stays in the engine, eliminating the need for manual priming. The 94 dBA open-skid sound level almost always requires an enclosed installation for commercial sites. The DSE DCP7310 controller and Stamford HCI534 alternator maintain parts commonality with the rest of the Blue Star lineup.#

Frequently Asked Questions
What engine is in the VD500-01?
The Volvo Penta TAD1641GE-B — a 16.1-liter inline-six turbocharged-aftercooled diesel rated 768 HP (573 kWm) at 1800 RPM. The '-B' suffix denotes the updated variant of the TAD1640/1641/1642GE engine family, featuring Volvo Penta EMS 2.4 electronic management, dual-frequency switching (1500/1800 RPM), and RoHS2 compliance. EPA Tier 2 certified for stationary emergency standby.
Why is the VD500-01 EPA Tier 2 instead of Tier 3?
The TAD1641GE-B engine family (used in the VD500 and VD550) complies with EU Stage 2 / EPA Tier 2, while the TAD1650GE (VD450) and TAD1351-1353GE (VD300-400) are Tier 3 certified. For stationary emergency standby applications (the primary use case for these generators), both Tier 2 and Tier 3 engines are permitted in most US jurisdictions. Consult local air quality regulations for specific permitting requirements.
How does the VD500-01 compare to the VD450-01?
Both are 16.1L Volvo Penta inline-six engines but from different design families. The VD500-01 uses the TAD1641GE-B (768 HP, Tier 2) while the VD450-01 uses the TAD1650GE (677 HP, Tier 3). The VD500-01 is taller (98 vs 93 in) and heavier (9,875 vs 9,250 lbs). The VD500-01 has a superior altitude rating of 6,562 ft (2,000 m) versus 3,280 ft for the VD450-01.
What is the altitude deration for the VD500-01?
Rated power is available up to 6,562 ft (2,000 m) at ambient temperatures to 122F (50C). This is an excellent altitude ceiling — suitable for virtually any job site in the western United States, including mountain installations.
