The Hipower HYSG-30 is a 30 kW standby diesel generator from the SafeGuard Series, powered by a Yanmar 4TNV98ZGGEH four-cylinder diesel engine. Single-phase 120/240V (M6U) configuration designed for light commercial standby applications where three-phase power is not required. EPA Tier 4 Interim certified. Manufactured in Olathe, Kansas by Hipower Systems, a Yanmar company.
Yanmar Reliability#
The 4TNV98 engine family powering the HYSG-30 is Yanmar's flagship compact industrial diesel — a 4.1-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine found in demanding construction, agricultural, and marine applications worldwide. In the HYSG-30, this engine is configured specifically for 1800 RPM generator duty, running at a conservative power fraction that supports the long 12,000-hour major overhaul interval Yanmar publishes for standby service. Factory integration between the engine and generator at the Hipower plant ensures that engine-specific packaging, cooling, and vibration isolation are engineered as a system. Right-Sized for Small Commercial#
At 30 kW single-phase, the HYSG-30 covers an important commercial standby scenario: the single-phase 120/240V building with a critical load in the 22–27 kW range. This profile is common in smaller commercial properties — specialty food businesses, single-tenant professional offices, light-retail centers — where three-phase power is not present and the building load does not justify a larger three-phase generator. Running at 75–85% rated output, the 4TNV98ZGGEH burns cleanly, maintains proper operating temperature, and accumulates service hours efficiently.
Service and Maintenance#
Maintenance for the 4TNV98ZGGEH in standby service: oil and filter at 250 hours or 12 months; air filter at 500 hours; fuel filter at 500 hours. The 12,000-hour major overhaul benchmark applies. Battery float charging is essential for maintaining standby readiness — a quality automatic battery maintainer is baseline equipment for any standby installation. Monthly exercise runs under load flush the fuel system, verify transfer switch operation, and provide a readiness check before the generator is needed for an actual outage.
