Overview#

The Generac SD500 is a 500-kilowatt diesel standby generator powered by a Perkins 15.2-liter turbocharged and aftercooled inline-six engine. Rated at 500 kW standby and 450 kW prime, it is one of the largest single-engine models in Generac's SD Series industrial diesel lineup, targeting large commercial, industrial, healthcare, and critical facility applications.

The SD500 uses Generac's alternator with Class H insulation and permanent magnet excitation, paired with the Digital H control panel providing NFPA 110 Level I and II programmability, Modbus protocol, and a predictive maintenance algorithm. At 500 kW, this unit competes with the Caterpillar C18, Cummins C500D6, and Kohler 500REOZK.

The Perkins 15.2L platform#

The SD500 steps up from the 12.5L engine in the SD400 to the Perkins 15.2-liter platform, gaining nearly 3 liters of displacement. With a bore of 137 mm (5.39 in), stroke of 171 mm (6.73 in), and 16.0:1 compression ratio, the engine produces 755 horsepower at rated kW. Piston speed is 2,020 ft/min with BMEP of 358 psi -- these are higher mechanical loads than the smaller SD models, reflecting the engine running closer to its limits at the 500 kW standby rating.

The jump in physical size is substantial: the open-set genset grows from 137.5 x 57.6 inches on the SD400 to 154.4 x 71.0 inches, and dry weight nearly doubles from 6,649 lbs to 10,435 lbs. This size increase must be factored into equipment room planning and rigging.

Ventilation and exhaust considerations#

The SD500 demands 30,582 CFM of radiator cooling air -- more than 60% higher than the SD400's 18,685 CFM. Combustion air at 1,483 CFM and exhaust flow at 3,955 CFM are also significantly higher. Maximum exhaust backpressure tolerance is 2.01 inHg, which is tighter than the 1.5 inHg on smaller models. Proper silencer selection and exhaust routing are critical to stay within this limit.

Our service experience#

The 500 kW class serves large hospitals, data centers, and campus environments in Northern California. The SD500's Perkins 15.2L engine is a proven industrial platform. At 32 gph full load, fuel logistics require attention -- ensure adequate fuel storage and delivery capacity for extended outage scenarios. The 24 VDC battery system uses dual Group 8D batteries; we recommend equalized charging and testing both batteries individually at each service visit. The 48-quart oil capacity means oil changes are more involved than on smaller models -- verify proper disposal logistics during service planning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SD500 use?
The Generac SD500 uses a Perkins 15.2-liter, six-cylinder in-line turbocharged and aftercooled diesel engine running at 1800 RPM. The engine has a bore of 5.39 in (137 mm) and stroke of 6.73 in (171 mm) with a 16.0:1 compression ratio. It uses a 24 VDC electrical system with dual 12V batteries. The crankcase holds 47.55 qt (45L) of oil. The engine is EPA Certified for Stationary Emergency applications.
What is the fuel consumption of the Generac SD500?
At standby rating, the SD500 consumes 32.0 gallons per hour at full load (100%), 24.2 gph at 75% load, 17.5 gph at 50% load, and 11.2 gph at 25% load. Total fuel pump flow (combustion plus return) is 121 gph. The fuel pump lift is rated at 12 feet.
What are the dimensions and weight of the SD500?
The open-set SD500 (no base tank) measures 154.4 x 71.0 x 67.3 inches and weighs approximately 10,435 lbs. This is a significantly larger footprint than the SD400 (137.5 x 57.6 in) due to the Perkins 15.2L engine platform. Sub-base fuel tank and extended runtime options are available, with weather-protected and sound-attenuated enclosures in steel or aluminum.
What is the ventilation requirement for an indoor SD500 installation?
The SD500 requires 30,582 CFM of radiator cooling airflow and 1,483 CFM of combustion air. Heat rejection to coolant is 648,307 BTU/hr. Exhaust exits at 1,022 degrees F at 3,955 CFM. Maximum exhaust backpressure is 2.01 inHg. These substantial thermal and airflow requirements demand careful mechanical room engineering.
