Overview#

The Generac SD015 is a 15-kilowatt industrial diesel standby generator powered by a Perkins 2.22-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. Rated at 15 kW standby and 13 kW prime, it is EPA Certified for Stationary Emergency applications and shares the same compact footprint and enclosure system as the SD010, making it a direct capacity upgrade for applications where 10 kW is insufficient. The generator is available in both single-phase (120/240 VAC) and three-phase configurations across voltages from 120/208V to 346/600V.

Generac pairs the Perkins engine with their K0025124Y21 alternator featuring Class H insulation and synchronous brushless excitation. The Digital H control panel provides NFPA 110 Level I and II programmable operation, Modbus communications, and a 7-day programmable exerciser. The engine coolant heater and closed coolant recovery system ship as standard equipment.

At 15 kW, this unit is well suited to small commercial facilities requiring slightly more capacity than the SD010: larger restaurant kitchens, small medical offices, security systems, and facilities with emergency HVAC loads. The identical physical package to the SD010 simplifies specification and permitting for facilities that may need to upsize from a previously installed smaller unit.

Our Service Experience#

The SD015 occupies the same installation footprint as the SD010 and is serviced identically. In practice, many small commercial facilities that initially specified 10 kW generators return to request a 15 kW replacement when load growth -- added HVAC equipment, expanded POS systems, expanded lighting -- pushes them past 10 kW peak demand. The identical footprint of the SD015 makes that upgrade straightforward.

The Perkins 2.22L engine requires clean ULSD fuel; the distribution injection pump is sensitive to water contamination and microbial growth in long-dwell diesel. We recommend biocide treatment and annual fuel polishing for any SD015 installation where the unit exercises fewer than 12 times per year. Verify coolant heater operation before cold-weather season, and maintain 50/50 ethylene glycol coolant per Generac's specification.

Frequently Asked Questions#

Does the SD015 require any additional infrastructure versus the SD010? The SD015 uses the same enclosure, fuel tank, and mounting options as the SD010. No additional infrastructure changes are required when replacing an SD010 with an SD015 in the same pad location, assuming the sub-base tank and transfer switch were already sized conservatively.

Is the SD015 available in 600V configuration? Yes. The SD015 is available in 346/600 VAC three-phase at 18 amps full-load at 0.8 pf, covering Canadian distribution systems and US facilities with 600V distribution panels.

What warranty does the SD015 carry? Standard warranty is 2 years limited for standby-rated units and 1 year for prime-rated units. Extended warranty options from 2 to 10 years are available through Generac Industrial dealers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the Generac SD015 use?
The Generac SD015 uses a Perkins 2.22-liter, four-cylinder in-line turbocharged diesel engine running at 1800 RPM. The engine has a bore of 3.3 in (84 mm) and stroke of 3.9 in (100 mm) with a 23.3:1 compression ratio. It uses a mechanical distribution injection pump and is EPA Certified for Stationary Emergency applications.
What is the fuel consumption of the Generac SD015?
At standby rating, the SD015 consumes 1.4 gallons per hour at full load (100%), 1.1 gph at 75% load, 0.9 gph at 50% load, and 0.7 gph at 25% load. Total fuel pump flow (combustion plus return) is 16.6 gph. The fuel pump lift is rated at 3 feet.
What voltages are available for the SD015?
The SD015 is available in single-phase 120/240 VAC (63 amps at 1.0 pf) and three-phase configurations: 120/208 VAC (52 amps), 120/240 VAC (45 amps), 277/480 VAC (23 amps), and 346/600 VAC (18 amps), all at 0.8 power factor.
What are the dimensions and weight of the SD015 open set?
The open-set SD015 without a sub-base fuel tank measures 76.0 x 37.4 x 44.8 inches and weighs approximately 1,456 to 1,641 lbs depending on configuration. With sub-base fuel tanks the height increases from 57.8 to 85.3 inches depending on tank capacity (54 to 300 usable gallons).
How does the SD015 differ from the SD010?
Both units use the same Perkins 2.22L turbocharged inline-4 engine and share the same open-set footprint and enclosure options. The SD015 is rated at 15 kW standby (versus 10 kW) and draws more fuel: 1.4 gph versus 1.1 gph at full load. It also has higher exhaust flow (179 cfm vs 110 cfm) and greater heat rejection to coolant (69,980 vs 53,900 BTU/hr). Applications that need 50% more capacity with an identical physical footprint typically choose the SD015.
