Overview#
The Generac MD1500 is a 1,500 kW modular diesel standby generator system powered by a Mitsubishi S16R-Y2PTAW-1 65.4-liter turbocharged and aftercooled V16 engine. As the largest model in Generac's MD Series lineup, the MD1500 is factory-configured with integrated paralleling controls and the InteliGen NT controller for automatic load sharing and synchronization across multiple modules.
Two MD1500 modules provide 3,000 kW of total capacity with full N+1 redundancy, serving the largest data center and critical infrastructure applications. The modular approach eliminates the single point of failure inherent in standalone megawatt-class gensets and simplifies transportation logistics -- individual 1,500 kW modules are substantially easier to rig than a single 3 MW unit. The system supports mixed configurations with other MD Series units for maximum design flexibility.
The Mitsubishi S16R is EPA Tier 2 certified for stationary emergency applications. The engine features dual-circuit cooling, a 212-quart oil capacity, and the Proact2 isochronous governor for precise frequency regulation during parallel operation.
Our Service Experience#
The MD1500 shares the proven Mitsubishi S16R platform with the SD1500. The 16-cylinder configuration across multiple modules creates substantial maintenance scope that requires methodical planning. We recommend staggering major service intervals (injector service, valve adjustments) across modules to maintain continuous N+1 redundancy throughout the maintenance cycle. At 133 gph per module at full load, fuel delivery and storage infrastructure is a critical design element for multi-unit installations. The dual-circuit cooling system on each module requires independent coolant sampling and maintenance.
