Overview#

The Generac MD1500 is a 1,500 kW modular diesel standby generator system powered by a Mitsubishi S16R-Y2PTAW-1 65.4-liter turbocharged and aftercooled V16 engine. As the largest model in Generac's MD Series lineup, the MD1500 is factory-configured with integrated paralleling controls and the InteliGen NT controller for automatic load sharing and synchronization across multiple modules.

Two MD1500 modules provide 3,000 kW of total capacity with full N+1 redundancy, serving the largest data center and critical infrastructure applications. The modular approach eliminates the single point of failure inherent in standalone megawatt-class gensets and simplifies transportation logistics -- individual 1,500 kW modules are substantially easier to rig than a single 3 MW unit. The system supports mixed configurations with other MD Series units for maximum design flexibility.

The Mitsubishi S16R is EPA Tier 2 certified for stationary emergency applications. The engine features dual-circuit cooling, a 212-quart oil capacity, and the Proact2 isochronous governor for precise frequency regulation during parallel operation.

Our Service Experience#

The MD1500 shares the proven Mitsubishi S16R platform with the SD1500. The 16-cylinder configuration across multiple modules creates substantial maintenance scope that requires methodical planning. We recommend staggering major service intervals (injector service, valve adjustments) across modules to maintain continuous N+1 redundancy throughout the maintenance cycle. At 133 gph per module at full load, fuel delivery and storage infrastructure is a critical design element for multi-unit installations. The dual-circuit cooling system on each module requires independent coolant sampling and maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the MD1500 and the SD1500?
The MD1500 is a modular (factory-paralleled) system designed for scalable, redundant power architectures. It uses the same Mitsubishi S16R 65.4L V16 engine as the SD1500 but comes factory-configured with integrated paralleling controls, enabling plug-and-play expansion with additional MD units. The SD1500 is a single-unit standalone generator at the same power rating. The modular approach provides N+1 redundancy, easier installation logistics, and the ability to service one unit while another continues operating.
What is the fuel consumption of the MD1500?
The MD1500 uses the same Mitsubishi S16R engine as the SD1500. At standby rating, fuel consumption is approximately 133.0 gallons per hour at full load, 97.3 gph at 75% load, and 66.0 gph at 50% load per module.
What voltages are available?
The MD1500 is available in three-phase configurations at 277/480V and 346/600V, both at 60 Hz.
