Overview#

The Cummins RS100 is a 100 kW liquid-cooled residential standby generator and the most powerful model on the 5.9-liter platform in the QuietConnect RS Series. The turbocharged and aftercooled inline 6-cylinder engine delivers the same 100 kW output as the commercial C100 N6 but in a residential-grade sound-attenuated aluminum enclosure.

The RS100 runs on natural gas or propane vapor (field selectable) at 1,800 rpm and produces 71 dB(A) at 23 feet. The enclosure is wind-rated to 180 mph per ASCE 7-10 and the unit handles cold weather starts down to -40 F with factory accessories.

At 2,830 lbs and 118.7 x 40.0 x 58.3 inches, the RS100 shares the same footprint as the RS50 through RS80 models. It is the top of the 5.9L platform -- for more than 100 kW, the RS125 and RS150 step up to the 8.9-liter engine with a larger enclosure.

Our Service Experience#

The RS100 is the residential equivalent of our commercial C100 N6 installations. The engine, alternator, and controls are functionally identical -- the primary difference is the residential enclosure and PowerCommand 1.1 controller (vs the commercial PowerCommand system with AmpSentry). This means our field technicians service the RS100 with the same tools, procedures, and parts as the commercial fleet.

At 100 kW the engine is running at its maximum rated output on the 5.9L platform. Fuel pressure verification under load is critical -- any dynamic pressure drop below 6.0 in H₂O at the engine inlet will cause lean running and potential engine damage. We always verify with a manometer during commissioning and at every annual service.

For residential installations above 100 kW, the RS125 and RS150 use the 8.9-liter engine in a significantly larger enclosure (143 x 40 x 72 inches, 3,915 lbs). This is a substantial step up in size and installation requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions#

What is the standby rating of the RS100? 100 kW, available in single-phase (120/240V) and three-phase (120/208V, 277/480V) configurations.

How does the RS100 compare to the RS80? Both use the 5.9L turbocharged engine in the same enclosure. The RS100 delivers 25% more power. The RS80 is preferred when load calculations are comfortably under 80 kW, allowing the engine to run at a lower percentage of rated output.

What is the warranty on the RS100? 2-year warranty from Cummins. Extended options available through authorized dealers.

Estimate runtime for the Cummins RS100

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

1,050,000 BTU/hr1050.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.
