Overview#

The Blue Star VD600-03 is a 600-kilowatt EPA Tier 2 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TWD1644GE — a 16.1-liter inline-six that introduces dual-stage turbocharging and water-to-air charge air cooling to the Blue Star Volvo Penta lineup. This is a current-production active model and the third generation of the VD600 platform.

The "TWD" prefix distinguishes this engine from the "TAD" family used in the VD230-550 models. The dual-stage turbo and water-cooled CAC allow the TWD1644GE to extract 917 HP from the same 16.1L displacement, with a dual-circuit cooling system that requires significantly more coolant (39.9 gal vs 15.9 gal).

Our service experience#

The TWD1644GE introduces dual-circuit cooling — a meaningfully different service profile from the single-circuit TAD models. The 39.9-gallon coolant capacity requires more fluid during initial fills and coolant replacements. The dual-stage turbo system has additional oil feed and drain lines that must be inspected during routine maintenance. The water-to-air charge air cooler adds a heat exchanger that doesn't exist on the air-to-air models, but it also eliminates the large charge-air-to-ambient radiator surface, which can simplify enclosure design. The DSE DCP7310 controller and Stamford alternator maintain parts commonality with the rest of the Blue Star lineup.#

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine is in the VD600-03?
The Volvo Penta TWD1644GE — a 16.1-liter inline-six with dual-stage turbochargers and water-to-air charge air cooling, rated 917 HP (674 kWm) at 1800 RPM. The 'TWD' prefix (versus 'TAD' on the smaller models) indicates water-cooled charge air cooling and dual-stage turbocharging. It uses steel pistons for high durability and electronic high-pressure unit injectors. EPA Tier 2 / EU Stage II certified.
How does the VD600-03 differ from the VD550-01?
The VD600-03 uses the TWD1644GE — a fundamentally different engine design from the TAD1642GE-B in the VD550-01, despite sharing the same 16.1L displacement. The TWD features dual-stage turbochargers (vs single-stage on the TAD), water-to-air charge air cooling (vs air-to-air), and a dual-circuit cooling system with 39.9 gal total coolant capacity (vs 15.9 gal). The VD600-03 is also physically larger: 150 x 78 x 100 in versus 140 x 72 x 98 in.
What is the '-03' suffix on VD600-03?
The '-03' suffix indicates this is the third generation of the VD600 platform. The VD600-01 (listed separately in Blue Star's legacy catalog) used an older Volvo Penta engine variant. The VD600-03 represents the current-production model with the TWD1644GE engine.
What controller does the VD600-03 use?
The DSE DCP7310 — the same controller used across Blue Star's current diesel lineup. It features CAN bus J1939 communications, RS-485 interface, IP 65 front panel rating, and remote communications via DSE2548 annunciator. cULus Listed and NFPA 110 Level 1 compatible.
