Overview#

The Blue Star VD230-01 is a 230-kilowatt EPA Tier 3 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TAD851GE inline-six. It sits in the mid-range of Blue Star's Volvo Penta diesel lineup — between the 200 kW class (JD200-01) and the 250 kW VD250-03. This is a current-production active model.

Blue Star Power Systems, Inc. is a Minnesota-based generator-set integrator acquired by DEUTZ AG in August 2024. The VD230-01 represents the updated component platform: DSE DCP7310 controller and Stamford UCDI alternator, replacing the Basler DGC-2020 and Marathon alternators found on earlier Blue Star models.

The Volvo Penta TAD851GE platform#

The TAD851GE is a 7.7-liter inline-six from Volvo Penta's industrial diesel family. It shares bore and stroke dimensions with the smaller TAD572VE (5.13L I-4) and the larger TAD1373VE (12.8L I-6), giving Blue Star a consistent Volvo Penta engine family across the 125-700 kW range.

Variant selection guide#

The VD230-01 occupies a unique kW point in Blue Star's catalog. Nearby options:

For sites requiring Tier 4 Final emissions (California new installations, non-emergency prime), the VD200-04FT4 or VD250-04FT4 are the closest Tier 4 equivalents.

Our service experience#

The Volvo Penta TAD851GE is well-supported in Northern California through Volvo Penta's industrial dealer channel. The updated DSE DCP7310 controller on this model is a departure from the Basler DGC-2020 used on earlier Blue Star units — DSE controllers are widely used across the industry and have strong third-party support for programming and monitoring. Stamford alternators are equally well-known, with parts available through Cummins Generator Technologies. As with all Blue Star units in our market, we recommend customers pre-stage primary service items (filters, belts) on-site rather than relying on next-day local availability from a Blue Star dealer.#

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine is in the VD230-01?
The Volvo Penta TAD851GE — a 7.7-liter inline-six turbocharged-aftercooled diesel rated 364 HP (272 kWm) at 1800 RPM. The TAD851GE is Volvo Penta's mid-range industrial diesel platform, sharing the same bore and stroke (4.33 x 5.31 in) as the smaller TAD572VE (5.13L I-4) but adding two cylinders. EPA Tier 3 certified for stationary emergency standby.
How does the VD230-01 compare to other Blue Star 200-250 kW diesels?
Blue Star offers three engine options at this kW class: the VD230-01 (Volvo Penta, 230 kW), the VD250-03 (Volvo Penta, 250 kW on the same TAD platform at a higher rating), and corresponding John Deere and Perkins models. The VD230-01 is the conservative choice — rated below the engine's peak capability, which provides greater thermal margin for continuous-duty standby applications.
What controller does the VD230-01 use?
The DSE DCP7310 — a newer controller platform compared to the Basler DGC-2020 used on Blue Star's earlier models. The DCP7310 features CAN bus J1939 communications, RS-485 interface, IP 65 front panel rating, and remote communications via DSE2548 annunciator. It is cULus Listed and NFPA 110 Level 1 compatible.
What alternator does the VD230-01 use?
A Stamford UCDI274J1 (at 480V) — a brushless, single-bearing, four-pole alternator with 125°C standby temperature rise and ±1% voltage regulation. Stamford alternators are widely deployed across the power generation industry, with parts and service available through Cummins Generator Technologies' global network.
