Thomson Quick Connect Panel

Automatic Transfer Switches

Generator docking station for safe portable generator connection. 100-4000A, cam-lock receptacles, NEMA 3R, color-coded phasing. UL 1008 Supplement SB / CSA 178 listed.

Overview#

The Thomson Quick Connect Panel (QCP) is a permanently installed generator docking station that provides a safe, code-compliant connection point for portable or rental generators. Available from 100A to 4000A with voltage options up to 347/600V, the QCP features color-coded Series 16 single-pole cam-lock receptacles (400A per connector) with self-closing NEMA 3R covers for weather protection.

The QCP is UL 1008 Supplement SB and CSA C22.2 178-12 listed. All models ship in a rust-resistant steel NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure with grey powder coating, a hinged door with locking T-handle, and wall-mount flanges for straightforward installation.

How it works#

The QCP is a connection-only device — it does not include any switching mechanism. The installation architecture is:

  1. Permanent wiring connects the QCP's mechanical lugs to the facility's automatic transfer switch (or directly to a load panel)
  2. When portable power is needed, the generator's output cables plug into the QCP's cam-lock receptacles (color-coded L1, L2, L3, Neutral, Ground)
  3. The existing ATS senses the generator source and handles the automatic transfer

This separation of connection and switching functions allows the QCP to be located at the most convenient point for generator access (loading dock, parking area, exterior wall) while the ATS remains in the electrical room.

TS870 TCP option: integrated ATS + QCP#

Thomson's TS870 ATS offers an optional TCP (Transfer switch Camlock Panel) configuration that integrates cam-lock connection capability directly into the transfer switch enclosure. This eliminates the need for a separate QCP when the generator connection point can be co-located with the ATS. The TCP option is available for TS870 units from 100A to 1200A.

Our service experience#

We install Thomson QCPs alongside new ATS installations and as retrofits to existing emergency power systems in the Bay Area. The most common request is adding a QCP to an existing facility that needs portable generator connection capability for NFPA 110 load testing or disaster preparedness.

The NEMA 3R outdoor enclosure and cam-lock connectors are industry-standard for portable power — rental generator companies arrive with cam-lock cables that plug directly in. We recommend mounting the QCP within 50 feet of the designated generator parking area to keep cable runs manageable at higher amperages. For the QCP-1200 and above, verify that the designated generator spot can accommodate the cable bundle diameter and weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Thomson Quick Connect Panel?
The Thomson QCP is a permanently installed generator docking station that provides a safe, pre-wired connection point for portable or rental generators. It features color-coded cam-lock receptacles (Series 16 single-pole, 400A per connector) with self-closing NEMA 3R covers, mechanical lugs for permanent load wiring, and a rust-resistant steel NEMA 3R enclosure. The QCP connects to a separate automatic transfer switch — it provides the connection point, not the switching function.
What amperage ratings are available?
The QCP is available from 100A to 4000A. Standard models include QCP-400, QCP-800, QCP-1200, QCP-1600, QCP-2000, QCP-2500, QCP-3000, and QCP-4000. Voltage options include 120/208V, 120/240V, 277/480V, and 347/600V at 50/60 Hz. Higher amperage panels use multiple parallel rows of cam-lock connectors.
What enclosure and mounting options are available?
All QCP models ship in a steel NEMA 3R outdoor-rated enclosure with grey ASA 61 powder coating, a hinged door with locking T-handle, and a locking trap-door for cable entry. Wall-mount flanges are standard. The QCP-400 measures 34 x 23 x 13 inches and weighs 100 lbs. The QCP-1200 measures 34 x 23 x 13 inches and weighs 150 lbs. Larger panels are proportionally bigger.
What optional features are available?
Optional phase monitoring modules are available: P1 provides phase failure and sequence detection (200-500V), and P2 adds overvoltage, undervoltage, and phase unbalance monitoring (450-720V). These options add a layer of protection to verify the portable generator output is within acceptable parameters before energizing the load.
When should I use a QCP vs a Position Test Switch (3PTS)?
Use the QCP when the facility already has a separate automatic transfer switch and you only need a connection point for the portable generator. The QCP provides cam-lock receptacles — the generator plugs in, and the existing ATS handles the transfer. Use the 3PTS when you need a switching function as well — the Position Test Switch includes a three-position manual switch (Normal/Test/Off) that transfers load between permanent and portable sources.

Key Terms

Quick connect panel
A permanently installed connection panel with cam-lock receptacles that provides a safe, pre-wired plug-in point for portable or rental generators. Unlike a transfer switch, the QCP does not include switching — it connects to a separate ATS that handles the transfer function.
Cam-lock connector
Single-pole, high-amperage electrical connector with a twist-lock retention mechanism. Standard in the portable power industry for temporary generator connections. Color-coded by phase (L1, L2, L3, Neutral, Ground) for safe, fast hookup.
Series 16 connector
Thomson's standard single-pole inlet connector rated up to 400A per pole. Multiple connectors are paralleled for higher amperage panels (e.g., the QCP-1200 uses three rows of connectors).
