Gen-Tracker GTU Series

Monitoring Systems

Universal remote generator monitoring via ATS contacts. Compatible with any standby generator 8 kW - 2 MW regardless of make, model, or age. Cellular with cloud dashboard.

Overview#

Gen-Tracker is a remote monitoring system for standby generators — designed for generator service companies that need visibility into their customers' equipment between maintenance visits. Its key strength: universal compatibility via ATS contact monitoring, meaning it works with any generator regardless of brand, model, controller type, or age.

Founded in 2001 by Generator Solutions Inc. (Oakdale, MN), Gen-Tracker is purpose-built for the generator service market rather than general building automation. It answers the fundamental question: "Is my customer's generator ready to run when the power goes out?"

Two product series#

GTU (Universal) — monitors via ATS relay contacts. No controller connection needed. Detects utility loss, transfer events, exercise cycles, faults, and fuel level. Works with any generator.

MBX (Modbus) — connects directly to the generator controller via RS-485 Modbus RTU. Provides full controller register data: voltages, current, frequency, runtime hours, fault codes. Requires a Modbus-capable controller (DSE, ComAp, etc.).

What it tells you#

EventAlert sent
Utility power lossYes — immediate
Generator fails to startYes — immediate
Exercise cycle missedYes — within scheduled window
Transfer switch failureYes — no building power detected
Low fuel levelYes — threshold configurable
Generator fault/pre-alarmYes — immediate
Utility power restoredYes — confirmation

Our service experience#

We use Gen-Tracker across our residential and small commercial fleet to monitor exercise cycles between quarterly service visits. The value: if a generator fails its weekly exercise, we get an alert immediately rather than discovering it 3 months later at the next PM. For our commercial accounts with BMS requirements (hospitals, data centers), we use DSE WebNet or OmniMetrix instead — Gen-Tracker doesn't integrate with building automation systems. But for the bread-and-butter residential and small commercial fleet, Gen-Tracker provides exactly the visibility we need at a reasonable cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Gen-Tracker work with any generator brand?
Yes — the GTU series monitors via the automatic transfer switch contacts, not the generator controller. This makes it compatible with any permanently installed standby generator from 8 kW to 2 MW regardless of brand, model, or age. No controller protocol knowledge required.
How does Gen-Tracker communicate?
Primarily cellular (data plan included in subscription — no separate carrier contract needed). Also supports Ethernet/LAN and legacy phone line. Built-in backup battery ensures reporting continues during utility outages.
What does Gen-Tracker monitor?
Utility power status, generator exercise completion/failure, transfer switch position, building load presence, generator faults and pre-alarms, low fuel level, and state changes (running/standby/fault). The MBX series adds full Modbus controller data (voltages, amps, runtime).
How does Gen-Tracker compare to OmniMetrix?
Gen-Tracker is simpler and more affordable — ideal for service companies managing residential and small commercial generators. OmniMetrix is more enterprise-grade with higher I/O count, SNMP support, satellite backup, and BMS integration. Choose Gen-Tracker for simplicity; OmniMetrix for data center/institutional requirements.
What's the pricing model?
One-time hardware purchase plus annual monitoring subscription (cellular data included). Pricing is not publicly listed — available through authorized dealer network. 3-year parts warranty on hardware.
