SENS Best Battery Selector (BBS)

Batteries & Chargers

Solid-state DC redundancy device for generator engine starting. No moving parts, no control electronics. BBS-800 (1250A peak), BBS-1600 (2500A peak), BBS-4800 (6400A peak). Prevents one bad battery from killing the other.

Overview#

The SENS Best Battery Selector (BBS) is the simplest and most reliable way to add DC redundancy to a generator starting system. It couples two independent battery banks to the engine starter, ensuring the generator starts even if one battery bank fails completely.

The elegance of the BBS is in what it doesn't have: no moving parts, no control electronics, no microprocessor, no software, no configuration. It uses solid-state diodes to automatically route starting current from the stronger battery while isolating the weaker one. There is nothing to fail, nothing to maintain, and nothing to misconfigure.

Model lineup#

ModelPeak currentContinuousTypical application
BBS-8001,250A45ASmall/mid generators (50-500 kW)
BBS-800S1,250A45ASame as 800 — compact form factor
BBS-16002,500A50AMid/large generators (500-1500 kW)
BBS-48006,400A150ALarge-frame generators (1500+ kW)

All models operate at 12-120VDC nominal (up to 148VDC actual battery voltage).

Why redundancy matters#

A standby generator with a single battery bank has a single point of failure. If that battery sulfates during months of float charging, develops an internal short, or loses a cell, the generator will not start during an outage. The BBS eliminates this risk by ensuring that one bad battery cannot prevent the generator from starting.

The failure mode it prevents is specific and common: a failing battery with high internal resistance draws current from the good battery through the starter wiring, dragging both banks below cranking voltage. The BBS's diode isolation prevents this reverse current path entirely.

Our service experience#

We recommend the BBS on every mission-critical generator installation — hospitals, data centers, water treatment, and any NFPA 110 Level 1 system. It's the lowest-cost, highest-impact reliability upgrade available. We've seen installations where a BBS prevented a no-start that would have been catastrophic (hospital during a PG&E PSPS event). The unit requires zero maintenance — we visually inspect the heatsink during annual PM and move on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Best Battery Selector do?
The BBS provides DC redundancy for engine starting by coupling two independent battery banks to the engine starter. During normal operation, both batteries contribute starting current. If one battery weakens or fails, the BBS automatically isolates the failed battery and delivers full starting power from the healthy one. It prevents the most dangerous failure mode in backup power: a bad battery dragging down a good one, resulting in a no-start.
How does the BBS work without electronics?
The BBS is a solid-state device using de-rated diodes with oversized heatsinks. No moving parts, no control electronics, no microprocessor, no software. The internal diode design automatically routes current from the stronger battery while blocking reverse current from the weaker one. This is the simplest possible redundancy — nothing to configure, nothing to fail.
What BBS model do I need?
Match the BBS peak current rating to your engine starter's inrush current. BBS-800: 1250A peak / 45A continuous — small to mid-size generators. BBS-1600: 2500A peak / 50A continuous — mid-size to large generators. BBS-4800: 6400A peak / 150A continuous — large-frame generators (CAT 3500, Cummins QSK, MTU 4000). All models support 12-120VDC nominal (up to 148VDC actual).
Is the BBS required by code?
NFPA 110 requires reliable starting for Level 1 emergency power systems. While it doesn't specifically mandate a battery selector, the intent of reliable starting is best met with redundant battery banks and a device like the BBS. Many specifying engineers include it on hospital and data center generators as a best practice.
What is the BBS-800S variant?
The BBS-800S is a compact version of the BBS-800 for space-constrained installations. Same 1250A peak current rating in a smaller form factor.
