Overview#

The Generac SG200 is a 200-kilowatt industrial natural gas/propane standby generator — the upper-mid-range of Generac's commercial gaseous lineup. At this capacity, Generac competes with Kohler's KG200 and Cummins' C200 N6 for large commercial facilities where gaseous fuel is preferred over diesel.

The 200 kW gaseous market#

At 200 kW, three OEMs dominate the gaseous standby segment:

The decision at this capacity often depends on: existing facility generator fleet (standardization), local dealer capability for emergency service, and whether the facility has a BMS that prefers a specific controller protocol.

Our service experience#

We see fewer Generac industrial units than Kohler or Cummins in our commercial accounts, but the SG series is growing market share. The Generac industrial engine platform is Generac-specific — parts and diagnostics require their dealer network. For facilities already invested in Generac residential products (and familiar with Mobile Link monitoring), the SG series provides a natural step into commercial backup.

Estimate runtime for the Generac SG200

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

2,100,000 BTU/hr2100.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Service intervals

Manufacturer-recommended intervals for the Generac SG200 under standby duty. Field intervals may differ based on load profile, ambient conditions, and fuel quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Generac SG200 compare to Kohler KG200?
Both target 200 kW gaseous standby. The SG200 uses Generac's turbocharged Generac industrial inline-6; Kohler's KG200 uses a 10.3L turbocharged V8. Both are 1800 RPM. Generac's cost advantage narrows at this size — the industrial dealer network and controller sophistication become more important factors than unit price.
Is the SG200 suitable for paralleling?
Yes — with Generac's paralleling controller option, multiple SG units can be synchronized. However, Generac's paralleling ecosystem is less mature than Cummins PowerCommand or DSE-based systems at this capacity class.
What size facility needs 200 kW gaseous?
Typical applications: large hotels (200+ rooms), campus buildings, multi-family residential complexes (200+ units), medium hospitals (non-critical loads), and light industrial facilities where on-site diesel storage is impractical.
