Overview#

The Hipower HGM-80 is an 80 kW stationary natural gas standby generator in Hipower's HGM series. Manufactured in Olathe, Kansas, the HGM-80 provides mid-light commercial standby protection from a compact, gas-fueled package that draws from the building's existing utility supply.

At 80 kW, the HGM-80 covers a meaningful commercial load — full essential systems in a small office building, a restaurant kitchen plus dining, or critical branch circuits in a light-medical facility. For California projects, CARB certification enables straightforward air district permitting without a source test.

Engine Platform#

The HGM-80 is powered by a General Motors Vortec 5.7LT turbocharged V8 spark-ignited gaseous engine — the turbocharged variant of the 350 CID (5.7L) small-block platform, producing 139 hp on natural gas. The turbocharger enables 80 kW from the same displacement as the naturally aspirated HGM-55/65 models. Marathon Electric provides the alternator (model 362CSL1604) with SE350 AVR. Note: the HGM-80 is natural gas only — LPG is not available on this model. Spark-ignited gas generator maintenance is simpler than diesel: no DPF, no DEF, no high-pressure injection. Key service items are spark plugs, oil changes, and gas system inspection at 1000-hour intervals.

CARB-Certified for California#

Hipower's HGM series holds CARB certification for stationary natural gas standby. California permit-by-rule applies — standard air district approval without source test or variance for the HGM-80.

Service and Maintenance#

  • Oil and filter: 1000 hours or 12 months
  • Spark plugs: 1000 hours
  • Air filter: 500 hours
  • Gas line and regulator: Annual inspection
  • Major overhaul: 30,000 hours

Our Service Experience#

OnPoint Generators services Hipower HGM generators throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. Natural gas standby at the 80 kW class is increasingly common in California commercial construction — CARB certification and utility-supplied fuel make it the practical choice for many building owners.

Estimate runtime for the Hipower HGM-80

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

840,000 BTU/hr840.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Service intervals

Manufacturer-recommended intervals for the Hipower HGM-80 under standby duty. Field intervals may differ based on load profile, ambient conditions, and fuel quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the HGM-80 use?
The HGM-80 uses a General Motors Vortec 5.7LT — a turbocharged variant of the 350 CID V8 small-block platform producing 139 hp on natural gas at 1,800 RPM. Note: this model is natural gas only; LPG is not available.
Is the HGM-80 CARB certified?
Yes. Hipower's HGM natural gas series holds CARB certification for California stationary standby applications.
What fuel options are available?
Natural gas and LP. The HGM-80 draws from the building's utility gas supply — no on-site storage required.
What applications suit the HGM-80?
Small-to-mid commercial buildings, medical suites, restaurants, and multi-tenant retail where 80 kW of natural gas standby covers essential building systems.
How does natural gas standby benefit California commercial buildings?
Gas standby eliminates diesel storage permits, SPCC compliance, and fuel delivery. CARB certification means standard air district approval — no source test required. For California buildings already on gas, this is the path of least regulatory resistance.
Who services HGM-80 generators in Northern California?
OnPoint Generators provides service and maintenance for Hipower natural gas generators throughout Northern California.
