Overview#

The Blue Star VD300-01 is a 300-kilowatt EPA Tier 3 diesel standby generator built around the Volvo Penta TAD1351GE — a 12.8-liter inline-six that marks the transition from the 7.7L TAD851-853GE engine family used in the VD230/250/275 models. This is a current-production active model.

The move to the larger-displacement engine brings meaningful engineering advantages: a 6,560 ft altitude deration ceiling (versus 1,640 ft for the VD275-01), V-ACT combustion technology with electronic high-pressure unit injectors, and overhead camshaft with four valves per cylinder.

The Volvo Penta TAD1351GE platform#

The TAD1351GE is the entry point to Volvo Penta's 12.8L industrial diesel family — the same displacement block that powers Blue Star's units up through the 400+ kW range:

Our service experience#

The TAD1351GE is well-supported through Volvo Penta's industrial dealer channel. The engine uses electronic high-pressure unit injectors (not common rail like the 7.7L models), which affects the service tooling required. The 12.8L block is physically larger — the OPU stands 80 inches tall versus 72 inches for the 7.7L models — so site clearance must be verified for pad and enclosure installations. The 6,560 ft altitude rating eliminates deration concerns for virtually all Northern California job sites, which is a significant specification advantage over the VD275-01. The DSE DCP7310 controller and Stamford alternator are shared with the rest of the Blue Star lineup, keeping service parts commonality high.#

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine is in the VD300-01?
The Volvo Penta TAD1351GE — a 12.8-liter inline-six turbocharged-aftercooled diesel rated 456 HP (335 kWm) at 1800 RPM. This is a step up from the 7.7L TAD851-853GE family used in the VD230/250/275 models. The TAD1351GE uses Volvo's V-ACT (Advanced Combustion Technology) with electronic high-pressure unit injectors, overhead camshaft, and four valves per cylinder. EPA/CARB Tier 3 and EU Stage 3A certified.
How does the VD300-01 compare to the VD275-01?
The VD300-01 moves to an entirely different engine platform — the 12.8L TAD1351GE versus the 7.7L TAD853GE in the VD275-01. The larger displacement gives the VD300-01 a significantly better altitude deration: rated power available up to 6,560 ft (2,000 m) versus only 1,640 ft (500 m) for the VD275-01. The trade-off is size and weight — the VD300-01 is 8 inches taller (80 vs 72 in) and 2,000 lbs heavier (7,775 vs 5,750 lbs).
What controller does the VD300-01 use?
The DSE DCP7310 — the same controller used across Blue Star's current diesel lineup. It features CAN bus J1939 communications, RS-485 interface, IP 65 front panel rating, and remote communications via DSE2548 annunciator. cULus Listed and NFPA 110 Level 1 compatible.
What is the altitude deration for the VD300-01?
Rated power is available up to 6,560 ft (2,000 m) at ambient temperatures to 122F (50C). This is a major advantage over the 7.7L Volvo Penta models (VD230-275), which are limited to 1,640-4,921 ft depending on the variant. For high-altitude sites in the Sierra Nevada foothills or mountain regions, the VD300-01's 12.8L engine provides substantially more margin.
