Overview#

The Hipower HNI-1000 is the flagship of the HNI natural gas series — a 1000 kW (1 MW) standby generator powered by a PSI spark-ignited engine. At 1 MW, the HNI-1000 is among the very few CARB-certified natural gas generators available from a non-Big-4 manufacturer, representing the top of Hipower's 30–1000 kW natural gas lineup.

A 1 MW natural gas standby system is a major infrastructure investment. Facilities at this scale — large data centers, hospital campuses, industrial complexes, and wastewater treatment plants — require utility coordination for the gas service upgrade, mechanical engineering for piping and regulator design, and a comprehensive commissioning and maintenance program to ensure reliability.

The natural gas advantage at this scale is significant: 1 MW diesel standby requires very large storage tanks (commonly multiple tanks above or below ground), a formal SPCC plan, fuel delivery logistics, and Tier 4 aftertreatment maintenance. Natural gas from the utility eliminates all of these — at the cost of requiring a higher-capacity utility gas service and infrastructure engineering.

Engine Platform#

The HNI-1000 uses a PSI spark-ignited engine at 1800 RPM consistent with the HNI series. The specific model designation for the 1 MW output class requires verification against OEM documentation. PSI's large-displacement platform delivers 1000 kW through a high-cylinder-count configuration optimized for stationary standby duty.

Maintenance follows the HNI series pattern: spark plugs and oil changes at 1000-hour intervals, annual gas system and ignition inspection, no DPF or DEF. At 1 MW, the scale of individual service events — spark plug count, oil volume — is larger than smaller HNI models.

CARB-Certified for California#

The HNI series holds CARB certification from 30 kW through 1000 kW. The HNI-1000's certification enables California permit-by-rule at 1 MW — a major competitive differentiator. At this power class, CARB-certified natural gas options from non-Big-4 manufacturers are essentially absent, making the HNI-1000 a unique offering for California projects.

Service and Maintenance#

Our Service Experience#

OnPoint Generators supports large natural gas standby systems throughout Northern California. At 1 MW, a standby generator represents a critical infrastructure asset — reliability depends on rigorous maintenance, regular load-bank testing, and a service team trained on the specific engine platform. OnPoint provides comprehensive service programs for large Hipower HNI installations.

Estimate runtime for the Hipower HNI-1000

Adjust load percent and tank size to estimate runtime. Pre-filled with this model's spec where available.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

10,500,000 BTU/hr10500.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine does the HNI-1000 use?
The engine model for the HNI-1000 has not been confirmed from OEM documentation and is under verification. The unit uses a PSI spark-ignited platform consistent with the HNI series. <!-- NEEDS VERIFICATION: confirm PSI engine model for HNI-1000 -->
Is the HNI-1000 CARB certified?
Yes. The full HNI series extends to 1000 kW with CARB certification — making the HNI-1000 one of the few 1 MW natural gas generators with California air district permit-by-rule eligibility from a non-Big-4 manufacturer.
What types of facilities use a 1 MW natural gas standby generator?
Large data centers, hospital complexes, wastewater treatment facilities, industrial campuses, and major commercial developments requiring 1 MW of backup power from a single engine-generator set.
What gas supply infrastructure is required at 1 MW?
1 MW natural gas demand requires a high-capacity utility service — high-pressure meter, large-bore regulators, and large-diameter distribution piping. This is a major infrastructure commitment requiring utility coordination and mechanical engineering. Early project planning is essential. <!-- NEEDS VERIFICATION: HNI-1000 BTU/hr and gas pressure requirements -->
How does 1 MW natural gas standby compare to diesel?
At 1 MW, diesel standby requires very large storage tanks, significant SPCC compliance programs, and complex DPF maintenance. Natural gas eliminates all of these — for California facilities with adequate gas infrastructure, the HNI-1000's CARB certification is a major permitting advantage.
Who services HNI-1000 units in Northern California?
OnPoint Generators provides service and support for large Hipower HNI units throughout Northern California, including 1 MW installations requiring detailed maintenance programs.
