Overview#

The Triton Power TP-NG800-UL is an 800 kW natural gas standby generator powered by a PSI (Power Solutions International) 40L turbocharged V-20 engine running at 1800 RPM. This unit is part of Triton's EPA-certified natural gas generator lineup, UL2200 listed for the US and Canadian markets. The Leroy Somer Class H insulation alternator delivers 800 kW (1000 kVA) standby and 720 kW (900 kVA) prime power in three-phase configuration at 120/208V and 277/480V.

The PSI 40L V-20 is a large-displacement gas engine purpose-built for high-output stationary power generation. At 800 kW, this unit serves large industrial facilities, hospitals, data centers, and campus-wide backup power applications. The V-20 configuration provides smooth power delivery from 20 cylinders, and the unit meets EPA Stationary Spark Ignition emissions standards. Sound output is rated at 70 dBA at 7 meters.

Our service experience#

The 800 kW natural gas class represents serious industrial-scale backup power. The PSI V-20 engine has a large component count — 20 spark plugs, 20 ignition coils, and correspondingly larger cooling and lubrication systems. Scheduled maintenance is more involved than on smaller models, but the engine's design provides good access to service points. Gas supply infrastructure at this level requires commercial-grade service from the utility, and we strongly recommend a dedicated gas meter and regulator station.

Estimate runtime on this tank

Fuel demand at 75% load

8,400,000 BTU/hr8400.0 cf/min @ 1,000 BTU/cf

On utility natural gas the runtime is generally unlimited provided the supply line and meter can deliver this BTU/hr at the engine's required inlet pressure (typically 5–14" WC residential, up to 5 psi commercial). Confirm against the OEM's published fuel-pressure spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engine configuration does the TP-NG800 use?
The TP-NG800-UL is powered by a PSI 40L turbocharged V-20 engine. The V-20 configuration uses 20 cylinders arranged in two banks of 10, providing the displacement and power density needed for 800 kW standby output. This is one of the largest naturally-fueled gas engine configurations available in the standby generator market.
What are the physical space requirements for an 800 kW natural gas generator?
An 800 kW natural gas generator with enclosure typically requires a concrete pad of approximately 20-25 feet long by 8-10 feet wide, with additional clearance on all sides for service access, cooling airflow, and code-required setback distances. Indoor installations require engineered ventilation, exhaust ducting, and gas detection systems per NFPA 37.
How does the TP-NG800 compare to paralleling two smaller natural gas units?
A single 800 kW unit is simpler to install and maintain than two paralleled 400 kW units, with lower total equipment cost and reduced control system complexity. However, paralleled units provide redundancy — if one unit fails, the other continues to carry partial load. The choice depends on whether reliability through redundancy or simplicity is the higher priority for the application.

Why we recommend Triton Power

Triton Power is our value brand for mobile and portable diesel generators, and an emerging option for industrial standby. When MQ Power's pricing is a stretch or lead times are too long, Triton delivers comparable capability at a lower price point with faster availability.

We are developing our Triton Power sales relationship and building fleet experience. Every engine platform Triton uses — Perkins, John Deere, Kubota, Scania, Volvo — is one we already service daily across other brands. Triton's open architecture means our technicians can maintain these units with standard tooling and widely available parts.
