Overview#
The Airman SDG40 delivers 28.6 kW of prime power from an Kubota V2403-CR-T common-rail diesel engine at 1,800 RPM. Despite sharing the same compact 67" x 31" footprint as the smaller SDG25, the SDG40 carries an 84.5-gallon fuel tank that provides an industry-leading 37-hour runtime at full load.
Switchable single and three-phase output covers voltages from 120V through 480V. Like all Airman units, the SDG40 features 110% fluid containment as standard and automatic voltage regulation within ±0.5%.
Sizing Guidance#
The SDG40 occupies a strategic position in the Airman lineup: it delivers nearly 50% more power than the SDG25 while sharing the identical 67" x 31" enclosure footprint. This makes it the right choice when a job site has already been laid out for a 20 kW unit but load calculations come back closer to 30 kW. The 84.5-gallon fuel tank — substantially larger than the SDG25's 51.5 gallons — translates to a 37-hour runtime that can carry a job through an entire weekend without refueling. For loads that consistently exceed 25 kW, the SDG40 is more fuel-efficient than running an SDG25 at or above its prime rating.
Our Service Experience#
The SDG40 is a popular choice for commercial construction in the South Bay and Peninsula, where general contractors need reliable three-phase power for elevator commissioning, HVAC startup, and temporary lighting on mid-rise projects. We also see strong demand from utility contractors doing underground work in San Francisco and Oakland, where the compact footprint fits into traffic control zones alongside other equipment.
The Kubota V2403-CR-T common-rail engine in the SDG40 is slightly more sensitive to fuel quality than the mechanical injection systems in older Airman models. We recommend using fuel with less than 500 ppm sulfur content and adding a fuel stabilizer if the unit will sit idle for more than two weeks. The common-rail injectors reward clean fuel with consistent performance and the exceptional fuel economy that drives the 37-hour runtime figure. Other than fuel discipline, the SDG40 follows the same straightforward maintenance pattern as the rest of the Airman lineup.
